Trying to find a load suggestion for this combination in my Marlin 45-70 SBL. Barnes manual doesn't have a load for this. From researching various sites, looks like a starting point of about 47 grains with a max of 50. Any suggestions from anyone else? I'm not new at reloading but normally go with info from manuals. This is my first attempt at straying from the books.

With the TSX being longer and a bit harder than cup and core bullets, I'd say you are in the ballpark.

Barnes has some data on their web page for H4198 with their 300 grain original FN (lead bullet). Other Hodgdon data shows higher powder charges for a 300 grain lead bullet and H4198.

Running the numbers in QuickLoad with a 300 grain Barnes TSX, I'm coming up with 45.2 grains @ 42K psi as max (40K cup). So, I'd start a little lower than that, and work up to the speeds where it should be at.

Thanks Chad. I'll go with your info and start about 43.5 and find what works. I'm hoping to get about 2300 fps or better. I appreciate it.

Got my loads worked up using 3 rounds per load variation. Best load has all 3 rounds dead center in the bullseye touching in a cloverleaf. Velocity is only 1879 fps average. I was hoping to bring it up higher but I think this will get the job done. Casings don't show any pressure signs but I'll stick with this for now. I appreciate the help guys. Thanks.
