Pretty much same as whitetails on body size. I was surprised on the bucks. I assumed small antlers also correlated with small bodies. But, the mature deer were good-sized. I'd guess 150-175 on the top end on the mature deer. Average shots should be 50-150, but longer shots are possible. Kind of depends on where you're hunting. There are openings, but not a lot of really large openings. Wooded areas are thick, especially from downed trees. The 'clear-cuts' are a nightmare though (much old debris). Didn't have trouble finding flat ground. But, didn't have trouble finding steep stuff either. Good mix of both, depending on elevation. Any mid-range caliber should be fine (.270-.300 mag; .270 or .30-06 is perfect).

Thoughts on going at them with a bow?

Hoping to spend $5k or less, would prefer something like a camping, hiking, maybe horseback riding into the mountains type adventure. I think an Elk hunt in Colorado or Idaho, or any hunt in the Wyoming/Montana area would be incredible and certainly an experience I'd love to have with dad. I've googled a lot, but have no experience trying to hunt out of state, so if anyone can point me in the right direction for a good, lower cost state/game hunt that has a decent shot of success I'd appreciate it.

Idaho is a better bargain then CO since they have more OTC tag options and can use your elk and mulie tags for bear, Lions and wolf if you choose.
Trying to send you a PM BOBO, it says you're over the limit. Would like more info

Idaho Department of Wildlife has a really good website. I haven't hunted with an outfitter up there just DIY

Slim chance. Anything is possible though. I took a bow and rifle when I went, never took the bow out of the case. Still-hunting would be extremely difficult. If you lived there, had time to scout, knew a food source, etc., but probably not much chance on a quick hunt. Could always use a rifle first and then bowhunt. Don't let me discourage you though, if you want to bowhunt, do it. One of the guys that went with me just took a bow. Almost got a shot at a yearling.

The US $$ is trading at a premium to the S African Rand, and there are some screaming deals out there in S Africa and Namibia. I've gone on 3 cull/management hunts in Namibia (10 animals included) the past 3 years at a cost of $3700 w/o airfare. Depending on when you travel (March-first half of May is cheapest) you can get round trip tickets for $100-$2200. Namibia is much like hunting the huge ranches in far West Texas and the people are first rate.

I have to agree here...right now you can even get a trophy or two mixed in.. Talked to a friend in S African the other day Gemsbok, Blue Wildbeest trophy...then culls... $3000...lots of shooting, and will treat you first class for 5 days...

If willing to fly, I booked a hunt in England for red stag, muntjac, and roe deer. The pricing on the actual animals are really affordable and with bring my wife, touring London a couple days, shooting non gold medal animals, and flights, we will be at about $3500. Can't beat that. That's not including taxidermy and shipping trophies back

I will have to agree with others that southern Africa is one of the best bargains out there. Most western hunts that good quality/quantity hunts are by draw. Most draws are very long oods or require lots of points. Canada can be a option as well especially for moose and bear, which are both reasonably priced compared to the US.

How about a mule deer hunt in Fort Stockton out of blinds or high racks? Pretty easy, laid back hunting and had great success for many years.
