John, check with Ron and Jason. I think they were just using el cheapo Remington Core Locts in my old Marlin 336 when they had the place in the panhandle. They killed a bunch of hogs up there.

Just as the reply above, my 270 with cor lokt's 130gr thumps em good, have had issues with hornady superformance sst's passing through the hogs not making enough damage. The cheaper cor lokts seem to do a better job at the 0-150 yard range. In my 300wm everything I have used (superformance sst and gmx and Berger vld) have done a tremendous job, every animal shot with that rifle has dropped. With your 308 I would expect more positive results, maybe start trying to shoot behind the ear instead of vital shots? Experiment with hollow points, soft points, ballistic tips etc.

Hogs are tough. Shot a 150 pound sow with a Hornady 300 grain SST 12 gauge slug at 30 yards. Was at night on a full moon (no artificial light) so I opted for a heart/lung shot. Complete pass through that obliterated the heart and both lungs...and she still ran 100+ yards before piling up. A CNS shot with a tough bullet is the way to go if you want them DRT.

True, a heart shot will cause them to eventually stop, but only after they run for 10-15 seconds. I've had heart-shot pigs run as far as 200 yards before dropping. Luckily, the trail they left looked like a six year old was given a can of red spray paint and told to hold the button down and go.

Neck shots....always neck shots.

Shooting at the ear to me is a no no.
If your going to shoot at the ear you need to shoot at the very base of the ear, in my experience shooting for the ear tends to lead to people shooting at the big flappy part which ends up being a very hi neck hit which will sometimes knock them down for a sec but they will usually get back up and not bleed. I like to shoot at the center point between the eye and ear in the middle.

Some of the Berger VLD-H bullets fragment very bad, which will limit your penetration. I've seen this with a 155 VLD-H out of a 308 Win at closer ranges on deer. But a 168 VLD should be enough bullet for the biggest of pigs. The main thing is you are shooting at some longer ranges. You may need to verify your exact shot placements on the range so you know your come ups and such.

My shot placement is generally in the neck area. If I have a solid rest and time to make a well aimed shot, I'll go for a head shot. But it is a lower % shot placement, especially at longer ranges. The neck shots break down the CNS, and 9 out of 10 hogs drop when hit. If you hit in or behind the shoulder, they WILL run. And often times a long way, with minimal to no blood trail. I stopped shooting pigs behind the shoulder, unless I'm shooting at multiple pigs on the run, after dropping the first one.

As a hog hunter myself and an outfitter I have seen these issues before. I typically carry my 22-250 hog hunting shooting them BEHIND the ear and have no problem dropping them. I have killed several over 200# this way and one that was close to 300#. As an outfitter I tell my clients to shoot them in the neck as it is a bigger target and will at the least knock them down for a follow up shot. Heart/Lung shots are almost always going to end up with a pig running off and slim chance of recovery because of the lack of bleeding they tend to seal up and absorb the shot. They are very tough animals but like anything else shot placement is key. FYI I shoot Hornady V-Max 50gr

I lost a hog Sat night from a 65 yard shot with 165 grain 30.06. Not a speck of blood. We looked next day and nothing. Maybe I missed but doubt it. I shot a moving yote earlier in the day. Hunt before that I dropped two from same distance in the same group. It happens.

I don't shoot as many hogs as most on here but I do shoot all that I can. I use a savage hog hunter in 308 (maybe it does better because of the name?). I have tried a few different brands off the shelf of Walmart and it likes the good ole core lokt and pigs sure do hate the core lokt. I havnt lost a hog yet with my 308, my bow is different

Aim an inch below the ear and behind it a couple inches. Between the base of the ear and the front point of the shoulder. This will give u a little room for error and still drop them. Don't aim high on the neck bc the spine dips down from the brain stem before going back up to the back. Kinda like the Nike check symbol. Good luck!

One of my hunting partners shot this nice sized pig. The shield is over an inch thick. The 6.8 hole was sealed up with no trace of blood.
