Which line of pointers do you have or have seen get it done well on wild quail in Texas? Looking at pointers for a footer hunter that range well find birds in the warmer whether south texas brush.
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Never cared much for Miller bred dogs. Maybe I just never got a good one. Hunted behind some good ones though. But that was just me. Liked the Elhew dogs crossed with Bayou Tech Willie lines. The old Pike Creek mike dogs were tough as boot leather and could run! Particularly liked he Damascus bred dogs crossed with them. Flashy running and great noses.
Pure Elhew always seemed a little soft.... but smart dogs usually seem softer to me. Had to be careful with them. I would love to have a few of my old trial dogs as pups this season and last season. I know they would have been better dogs with this many birds. Wold birds are the best trainer ever borned.

I have Elhew lines. I've been happy with their range. I've hunted off of a mule with them and off foot. They adjust fine to either and they adjust with the cover.

I have a gyp female out of Elhew Damascus that is Elhew on both sides and a pup with a lot of Millers Silver Bullet and Elhew Snakefoot on one side and Additions Go Boy / Dunns Fearless Bud on the other. The Elhew bred is much softer, basically a house dog, super smart, thinner coat for hot climes, and super natural. The 10 mo old Millers pup is spastic, fearless, feels no pain, is already rolling 300 yds out in open country and might be a handful next season to get her slowed down to be a walking dog. I have a old male dog that is guard rail and fiddlers breeding that is in between.

My experience has been that a Miller X Elhew cross produces smart bidable dogs with drive and good snoots. If I could only have one more dog and I could get it bred close up it would be an Additions Go Boy pup.

This is one of the best litters I've ever seen. They excelled in several venues and were great on wild quail.

Blackhawk has produced many fine dogs and has when crossed with Elhew females. I would feel confident looking at that kind of pup. But I would want to get a son of Blackhawk that has proven himself in the field. I would also want to bred to a tight bred Elhew female whose mother line goes through Elhew Swami or Elhew Hannabell.

I had a littermate to Swami. I helped pay the stud fee. I went up to Kansas to bring home the first pick. Swami had a broken front which was in a cast. That eliminated her for me. I brought home one and named her Pepper. She got hit by a pickup and killed. I still cry.

Look at Pinehill Kennels. A lot of Blackhawk x Damascus. I have a 9 month old male that has been pointing and holding solid for 2 months. Natural retriever and great stamina.

The breeding is important but its still a crapshoot. My Honky Tonk Attitude female was the best that a lot of people had ever seen. She would bet all the other dogs combined. Cracker is by her brother out of a champion female. She's not even in the same class.

I have had two miller pups both have shown signs of hypoglycemia and both had a hard time hunting in the sam zip code I was in. Very sweet loving dogs. Great dogs but need a good handler and lots of ground time.
Tigger If it isn't white it is not a birddog.
KC Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy. _________________

There has been several great crosses between bloodlines in the pointer breed. The two that really come to mind is the Ch Rock Acre Blackhawk X Elhew Katie Lee and Ch Wipperwill Wild Agin X Sparkles. These two crosses have produced multiple field trial champions and some great birddogs. There also have been some excellent birddogs coming out of Sean Derrig's Erin Kennels.
