.308 all the way. It will ALSO take any game in the US, shoots the exact same bullets as the 300, just does it with less velocity, at both ends of the gun! The 308 shoots plenty flat out to 300 yds, and 95% of game is taken under 300 yds even in the wide open west.
Someone not real experienced with rifles as you seem to be (no offense meant at all) would propably find the recoil from a 300 a bit offensive. This DOES NOT mean your a sissy, recoil effects everyone, some just don't like to admit it.
I have used both along with alot of other calibers. I've hunted here, plus several western states. I love the 300 and use one a fair amount, but I'll admit I enjoy shooting a 308 more. And the last few animals taken with my 300 ( mule deer, aoudad rams (free range), and whitetails) could have just as easily been taken with a 308.
The 308 is also very popular out west for taking game thats alot bigger than our little piss ant deer and hogs.

I think the 308 is the most over rated round ever. I here all the time about to much gun or enough gun and it really depends on the shooter. Deer and hogs have been killed with a .22 long rifle. If I were a guide I would hate to hear some one tell me they have brought a 308

Bullet placement is the trick to all great hunts, Period. I like the 308 because of the range it will shoot, but .22- up to the 300 Ultra Mag, all are great guns, But back to the top-Bullet Placement Be comfortable with the gun you shoot and "the kick" of the gun can play a great part in a succesful hunt

And exactly what experiences do you base your hatred for the 308 on?
Would you feel the same if they showed up with a 30/06 or 7mm-08?

I am a Guide ...been one for a total of 20 odd years ....both fishing and hunting....Thus, I feel that I am more than qualified to make this reply.
I have shot a 30/06...7 Mag (My fav, next to a 308), 243, 300 Win Mag, 338, 30-30...etc etc...For my money and for the way I hunt I have killed Mule Deer, Oryx, Antelope, White Tails, Javelina, Ferral Hogs, Black Bear, Black Buck, Audad, Ibex, Sheep, Goats, Jack Rabbits, Cotton tails, Turkeys and even squirels.....all with a .308 and all with VERY FAVORABLE LONG RANGE RESULTS.
I guess that is why "most" MILITARY Sniper Teams in the world prefer the 308 round/rifle 10-1 over anything else and the Remington 700 in .308 is the most utlized weapon of death for most U.S. Military Snipers out there.
Lastly, the Ballistics on a hot 308 round are far favorable over "most" other 7.62/30 caliber rounds out there. The Inertia and kinectic energy behind that round is what kills...not nessecarily the round.
So, "don't be a hater of things you do not understand ....and understand that some people have different likes than you.
This concludes today's lesson.

Hey guys...I have been a lurker on here for a couple of years and I guess it's time to start posting. Anyway, I am wanting to get a new rifle. I am set on the Savage 10fp and cannot decide if I want a .300 or .308. I will be using the gun to hog hunt and deer hunt. Does the .308 have plenty of knockdown power for hogs? I know the .300 does. Thanks for any advise
I have a SAVAGE 10FP/LE in .308...Deadly out to 500 yards and farther....."depending on the shooter!"
Inside 400 yards is a Cake walk and this is ALL I SHOOT...see previous post.
I can send you pics of many of my kills....including the last Hog I shot....DRT.
Sig226 can get you a GREAT deal....My last piece of advice....PUT GOOD GLASS ON IT! Do not half Azz your Glazz!!! LOL!

x2... being the youngun on every lease I've hunted on, I've had the duties of crawling my rearend through countless clearcuts in search of other peoples' wounded animals. Most have come from 308s & 243s. The only exception I would make for the caliber would be the .308 Warbird.

There is no substitute for being a good shot. It seems that to many people spend less time shooting than they should to get to know their weapon. I may not have ever been a guide but I have traveled the world shooting everything from elephant to rabbits. To many times I have seen a poor shot taken by someone with a "tack driver" 308 that has resulted in a lost or wounded animal. I own a 308 it shoots well. Given the two guns to choose from I would purchase a 300wm. I am not a hater of the 308 I just think it is overrated. Most shoots are taken at a relative close range so pull your skirts up and shoot your 308's. :-) At 500 yards I will still take the extra 350 ft. lbs of energy. Just my opinion.

You may supposedly have "world wide" experience but you opinion of rifle calibers leaves serious doubts.
I have personally taken about 150 big game animals of several species (not including hogs and other BS) here and about five other states plus Mexico. I been witness to propably to that many at least taken by other hunters over 30 yrs.
To say the 308 is overrated for deer is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
500 yds hugh? I'm not saying you can't do it consistantly but for 99% of average hunters shooting at unwounded game at 500 yds is nothing short of UNETHICAL! I still live on a ranch and shoot hogs etc on a regular basis and have a shooting range right out the back door. I'm not even comfortable at 500 yds and I've propably forgot more about rifle ballistics and trajectory than alot of people even know. I've been handloading since I was 15.
I would have to say the one of the most UNDERRATED cartridges is the 308! Most average hunters shooting 300's should propably be shooting 308's, their hit/success rate would propably go way up whether they want to admit it or not.
BTW the bullet has a whole lot more to do with it than the catridge. And the person behind the gun is the most important element. Bill
I grew up on a ranch and watched hunters come in with everything from 338's to the 22 hornet. Personally I worried more about the guy with the 338 wounding and losing his deer than the guy with the hornet. Usually I was right..... Not saying the Hornet is a good deer cartridge, just making a point.

I say a .308 or 30-06 will pretty much take anything you want, with the right placement.

Well I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night and my Pee Pee is bigger than yours too. Get over yourselves guys. Shoot what you like. We all have our favorites. Mine just happens to be a 308 also. I think it really boils down to what you personally are the most comfortable with therefore making you more confident in your abilities to handle it well. Just my 2 cents.

Your right. Even if you didn't like the 308, I'd say your right .
I just hate it for guys who ask honest questions for advice on caliber selection getting told they need the latest "super-mag" to properly kill a measly deer or hog.

wow, I did nothing more than express my opinion on a firearm. I two own a ranch and I doubt you could hold my jock when it comes to reloading and shoting etc. As for game I to have many good animals under my belt. Lighten up the gun I shoot the most is a 257 ai. I have no need for any magnum I would simply choose it over the 308.
BTW I agree that it is the person that is behind the rifle that is the most improtant. lets agree to disagree and get on with things more productive than how much better you are than all of us.

always go with the larger caliber if you are comfortable with the recoil, you won't regret it!!

I wasn't trying to put myself off as a know-it-all, I'm far from it, I was just sharing my experiences to back up my choice. Before you cry foul and that you were attacked for your opinion you need to go back and read all the posts again. You stated your choice on page 1, I stated mine on pg 2. It could have been left at that, but as soon as I stated my choice you immediately retorted with your post of the 308 is "way overrated" or something like that. When I politely asked what experiences gave you this opinion you replied by not really answering my question but made sure to end your post with "you all pull up your skirts and shoot you 308's". Don't dish it out if you can't take it. Just for the record I only one 308 in the safe now and rarely use it, but I love its little brother the 260 and shoot it alot. brianl, I think agreeing to disagree is a good idea. Thats how it should have been in the first place. Bill
