I bought a 300 blackout today for home defense and as a "side arm" when piercing oinkers with my 308. What do you guys think about the round itself. I will not be suppressing it

I have a SBR in 300 BLK. I think its useful as long as you keep in mind its limitations. I would say its a light 30-30 and keep that in mind in regard to range and abilities. Choose the duty for the rifle and use the appropriate ammo for the occasion and know your distances and I think you will be fine. As far as a home defense rifle, Im sure it will be fine, but could have over penetration. I would use a tipped round that would expand rapidly on target if it was my bedside rifle. As far as a back up to hogs, I would probably use a Barnes TSX round or something that would penetrate deeply enough in such a tough animal. Thats just my thoughts with my limited use thus far. I know that alot of guys have used them for deer and hogs.

I could see it being useful for home defense but other than that I dont have much use for it. Any distance past 50yds and Id rather just run a 308.

I spent a lot of time and money trying to get the 300BLK to be something it just couldn't be. For a period of about a year, I spent more time working loads and trying different bullets than all my other calibers combined. I finally sold my upper, brass, bullets, dies, and reloading data and have never looked back.
The only load I ever really liked was Barnes 110gr Tac-TX over 19.2gr H110. That load was very accurate out of my particular upper (AAC 16" 1:7).
I wish I would have spent that time and money getting into 6.5 Grendel.

Always struck me as the answer to the question no one asked.

Good, bad, or indifferent ...... Ours shoots under MOA with my handloads. And I don't want to get shot with it at 100 yards. I highly doubt that a pig or deer would, either.

With rounds like the Grendel and SPC, I don't understand the popularity of that round.

I only see the appeal if you want to suppress it. And that's just because subsonic rounds seem easier to come by for the 300 than other calibers.

To me, it was one of the two best options to set my 7 yo up on to hunt. Ar platform allows us to adjust the stock, low recoil, and throw a big chunck of lead to knock a big hole in an animal. I'd prefer this over a youth model rifle that I won't need in a few years.

If your going to suppress it then yes, otherwise 6.5 grendel would be my choice.
What length barrel does it have?

Used for what it was designed for (subs, short barrel and suppressed) it's a rockstar. With standard velocity ammo it's a decent deer and hog round with limitations. Also a great hunting round out of a contender pistol. I have 3, an sbr AR15, a 16" bolt gun and a 16" custom made contender G2.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Home defense and sidearm - guess you have an AR pistol? For short-intermediate range it is a good round. Don't know why anybody would think you need a 6.5 round for that.
I've killed more than a few pigs and a couple deer with it, def not something I'd want to get shot with either.

I love my 300 blk out's (plural). I hunt with a bolt gun and night hunt with my AR with a thermal scope for pigs. For a 30 caliber round in a 223 sized case, it's freakin' awesome. A 110 grain V-max in the blk out makes a great self defense round. It would be very nasty. If you need good ammo, here is my link to good blk out ammo: http://dallasreloads.com/product-category/300-black-out/

In some reading, I have seen where the BLK was supposed to be the next big CQB round, big heavy bullet at moderate velocities out of a smaller package...
However, some LEO's around my area partnered with Modern Carbine when they were still in Meridian, MS and started using the 6.8... From what I understand, they had to stop using it in their training house because it was punching through the steel-lined inner walls...
Within it's capabilities, I think the 300 overlaps a niche with the 5.56/.223 and the 6.8...

So it's a pistol with a 10.5 barrel. It's mostly going to be a home defense if things get sticky but I'll throw it over my shoulder when I go pork chopping. I heard about how good of a round it is , then I go home to do some research and get bombarded by bad reviews. I think people are trying to use it for distance shooting which I have no want to do its strictly cqb or a bailout if charged by squealers. I plan on throwing a eotech on it since it has nothing , not even flip ups

for hunting, it doesn't make nearly as much sense as a 6.8 or 6.5 Grendel.
However, for a PDW application it makes sense to me. It works well out of 7-8" barrels, and doesn't have the deal-breaking muzzle blast/noise that a short barrel 556 does. I've got a cheapie 8" upper, and it gets carried around a lot. Not shot a lot, it's there just in case. and I'm happier with a 300blk than I was with the 556 it replaced.

I use mine for hogs. I can use the same can on the 300 that I use on my 308. The 6.8 is a better option IMHO. I don't see the need for a .223

If you reload its awesome. You have a gun that shoots a 30 caliber bullet that you can load sub or supersonic. It can be suppressed, loaded to hunt with effectively, its small.
Its a neat versatile caliber to own in my opinion. I reload though. Factory, good ammo, can be high.
