Hey guys...I have been a lurker on here for a couple of years and I guess it's time to start posting. Anyway, I am wanting to get a new rifle. I am set on the Savage 10fp and cannot decide if I want a .300 or .308. I will be using the gun to hog hunt and deer hunt. Does the .308 have plenty of knockdown power for hogs? I know the .300 does. Thanks for any advise

the .308 will work great...and it will be a better choice of the two that you mentioned for whitetail.

I use a 308 and havent had a hog or deer get away. Easier on the wallet and shoulder.
It's still "we the people", right?

I say the .308, and if you want more punch from the .308 use the hornady light mags, and you will get dang near 300 mag performance out of it.

Do you guys think a .308 would be enough gun for an Elk? I'm thinking not, but maybe so9me of you have experience with it.

Yes it is fine for elk, especially with the light mag loads. At 500 yards with the light mag load it is within 300 foot lbs of energy of the 300 win mag, and only drops 6 more inches.

I have both calibers and they work well for me, but the 308 rarely goes to the woods unless my nephew asks to borrow it now. Have grown fond of pulling the trigger on the 300wm and the deer laying either right there, or a cpl steps away. Can't tell you about the hogs, they get shot up-side the head (or in the face as others like to say).

I would say a .300 win mag, has awesome ballistics. And if you want to save money, go with a .270, it works on hogs, and I know that for a fact. I'd take my .270 elk hunting myself. If you look at fusion bullets, they .270 has nearly identical ballistics to the .308, the only bullet better, you said it, the .300

i have both, but i have not found anything in Texas big enough to shoot with my 300wm.My 308s have been rolling deer and hogs up with in a few feet for years.so i would have to go with the 308win as far as elk i would used the 308 as long it wasn't over 250yrds witch would cover most elk hunts.if i was planing for a longer shot on a big game hunt i'd step up to my 264wm or my 338wm.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the .308. But as a meat hunter, I find even that is too much for whitetail. You catch a rib (or any other bone) and you're gonna loose a good bit of meat. I have no problem knockin' 'em down with a .223. I popped a 100 lb doe with an AR10 this past season and had to throw away the entire opposite shoulder. No bueno.

amen, even a 22 mag, hit them in the head, back, neck, arse, guts...doesn't matter, just get a bullet in them.

I shoot my 300 win at everything, including prairie dogs.... Makes short work of everything.

I like both but 308 ammo is A LOT cheaper (when you can find it) I'd go 308

The most universal rifle ever. If you only need/want to buy one big bore, its the way to go. Sabots for smaller game, 150s for deer, hogs and antelope, 180s for elk, caribou, moose, chihuahuas and house cats. Just today when I was picking up brass I saw an old fella pinging the hell out of a steel ram at 487 yards over and over with a $400 Savage 30-06. He did miss every once in a while, though.

for pigs and deer go with the .308, its not only cheaper but you wont tear up as much meat on deer. as far as taking down an elk it could do the trick but i wouldnt try a shot more than 250 yards at most. good luck to ya man

between the two I would vote for the 300. I have both. Just not a big fan of the 308. If you are looking for one gun give a lot of thought to the 30-06. For Texas hunting from a stand looking at a feeder you would not go wrong with either IMO.

300 win mag, hands down. .308 can handle any deer or hog in Texas. But a 300 win mag will handle anything in North America. And pretty much anything else in the world, with the exception of elephants and cape buffalo. And plus, saying "300 win mag" sounds a lot cooler than saying "308"!!!!! But there is quite a bit of recoil in the 300WM.....but anyone that complains about that is a sissy!
