Haydel dr-85 is pretty good and often recommended, but I really like my faulks dr-66, it's easy to work but does lock up sometimes.

I started with a Haydel dr 85. It was an ok call, had luck with the feeding chuckle and quacks, i just never could make it sound "ducky" enough on welcomes and such. Best call and easiest for me to work is the Echo Meat Hanger. I love it, versatile as can be. Yes, i know its pricey, especially compared to a $20 Haydels but i think its worth it. Get a good call and learn it. Im not great or even good by most peoples standards; but im comfortable and i do turn ducks with the Echo.

Double reed Primos Wench is what I started on.... I've zink and field proven are pretty good calls, but it doesn't matter how much you spend, if you can't blow it... the wench is a good call still and prolly $20... start out with a double reed for sure. They're a lot less forgiving than single reeds.... you can blow a loud call soft, but you can't blow a soft call loud.

Buck Gardner double nasty was real easy to blow and sound ducky. It's pretty cheap. The one I bought came with a little push button electronic call to hear samples of 4 basic calls. That helped me.

There's a ton of great calling video's on youtube or you can get on the Ducks Unlimited site and they have instruction as well. DR-85 is a good go to for beginners but there's plenty others out there. One of the long time calls I've used and still use is a Primos Timber Wench. Another cheap call but I've brought in hundreds of ducks with that over the years. The Pro Mallard call from them is another one I have.

I guess I'm different and I feel like u should get a good single reed such as RNT or ECHO and go from there! It's a lot tougher to learn on single but once u do, then ur good to go. I started on rnt short barrel and don't regret it one bit.

Im learning just as you are. I went to academy and bought the 4 different calls they had on clearance for $2-5 a piece. Im learning with them and will likely put them away or give a couple to another newbie after I buy a good call or two.

That dr-85 sure has been thrown out there a lot in reading google searches for beginner calls. I don't mind spending a little bit of money if it's going. To be a call that will work for me down the road.

Man, you can never go wrong buying a Duck Commander. I know many don't like them, either because of their show or the over over saturation of duck dynasty in general. But their calls do work, are easy to use and are relatively inexpensive and easy to find..

I tried most of the lower end calls and I liked the PS Olt it was a gift and works really well, the quack head j frame, the zink power hen 2, the original duck commander and a good whistle. I am a DU member and always get their calls. They are all Buck Gartner calls. I really like the one from this year as well. I have not tried the Haydell mallard but use their blue wing teal call.
