We raised a set of pups out of our oldest dog this year, and decided it was time to take them to the wild. I took one pup and the old man, with me and dad carried a pup and his best dog with him. First day, normal pup day, bouncing around acting foolish and ticking the old dog off. Managed to get him a couple crippled birds to chase down. I love this scenario, for pups, it really seems to turn them on. He stayed under my feet all day, not a bad thing. Right at the end of the day, he kicked up a jack rabbit and the chase was on, I thought great, how far is he gonna run and will I find him? About 100 yards out, he slides to a stop and locks down, sure enough he had a single pointed and held it! Pretty proud of him. Second day, found a road covey right after loading the dogs, put them out on them, the old man winded them and started creeping, pup fell in right behind him in a creep but passed him. I was thinking, he's gonna bust right through them, but nope locked up like a statue, killed two on the rise. Pup went on to point 8 covey by himself and held every point. I was pretty amazed at this pup, being 10 months old, and his second day in the field. We have had a lot of pups, but very few of them have been this natural. First pic I think is special, this is the dad backing the 10 month old son, the old man's health has declined, and I think this will be his last season.

Tigger
If it isn't white it is not a birddog.

Lying is lying. Don't bitch about one doing it and condone another. That's called hypocrisy.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Great story, thanks for posting it. The first trip out for a real hunt with a pup is always special, but it sounds like you have one with great talent there.

We all need to practice Whoa more.
