I have a problem and do not know how to handle it. My in-Laws own 1/2 section in childress. My father in law is not a hunter but loves to get out on the property to watch wildlife. Every time I go with him, he wants to corn all of the roads on the property then circle back around and sit for about 10 to 15 minutes before he is ready to move on.
Problem 1 - I tell him we need to sit still and wait. It is a waiting game. He does not like to sit still and love to keep moving. We have always spotted deer but rarely have a chance to take a shot on a decent mature deer (I wonder why).
Problem 2 - The roads on the property are all on the perimeter fence line. There are not any cross roads. By feeding the roads and continuing to move, we could possibly interrupt the neighbors if they are hunting. I tell my Father in Law that there is a law of some sort regarding purposely interrupting the neighbors hunt. He does not care as he does not look at it as if we are doing it on purpose as it is his family land.
The last time we were out. We came over a hill and spotted a 6 point on our property eating corn about 600 yards out. We stalked up to about 75 yards and decided to watch as the buck was not mature enough to take. While we were watching, I look over my shoulder and a truck on the neighbors side was coming towards us. I stood up and walked to the truck. The gentlemen was the lease holder of that property and stated his wife saw us walking from her stand (well over 1000 yards away). She did not know who we were and wanted to make sure we were not trespassers. We shook hands swapped a couple stories and I apologized for ruining their hunt.
Hunting this way drives me nuts. He still insists that it is his family property and we can hunt any way we want. How would you feel about this?

Sounds to me that you stated your opinion. He has his, and since it IS his land, he certainly can do as he wishes. If it were me, I would ask for permission to go hunt when he is not there, and then I could hunt the way I want to hunt.

You hardly ever see or hear of local guys sitting in deer stands. I have family and friends from all over the hill country about the only hunting they do is in the pick up with the window down. They make fun of us city boys in our deer stands sitting out in the cold.
With the only roads being in the fence line that is actually perfect for you. If he would allow you to set up a feeder and a blind in the center of the place. Make sure that you do not make a road to your stand because then folks will drive up to your feeder. Make sure it is a hike on foot to your spot. His driving around would not hurt you and probably help you at that point.

I am ok with hunting his way but would prefer to stay off the fence lines. I guess I just feel bad if we were to ruin the neighbors hunt.

thats not much land in that part of the country. Prolly a handful of deer to begin with. One feeder in the middle would be best and neighborly

Y'all should drink more while you're patrolling the fence line. It will make it a lot more fun and you're father in law probably won't mind your whining as much.

Well, I can't help but think that it's dangerous being that close to the fence line. Dangerous because other people on other land may shoot something & inadvertently (or not) send lead your way.
When y'all are hunting the fence line, what is your plan for when a wounded deer jumps the fence onto the neighbor?
I just dont understand people who hunt a neighbors fence line. Maybe y'all will get high fenced out 1 day.

I hunt from my Jeep and have for about the last eight years due to health problems. The deer get used to vehicles especially if they get fed from the vehicle on a fairly regular basis. I've driven up on deer that were bedded down in the sendero before daylight waiting for me to drive past them before they stood up and started eating the corn I just dropped from my coffee can. I've been parked, and had deer walk up to the back of my Jeep looking for the corn they smelled in the bumper rack, while I'm sitting there with the gun barrel sticking out of the window. I've shot deer out of my Jeep using my crossbow, just to show how close they will come to you if they know you feed them. Some may not think that it's hunting, but someday if you are lucky to live long enough you'll also do what it takes in order to do what you love to do.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I do hope that one day I am lucky enough to have to hunt from a jeep because I've lived long enough!
