My younger brother made this impressive kill on a rather large skunk and I thought it might be cool/funny to tan the pelt and give it to him. Can see him in his golden years regaling the grandkids with his tails of mad "bail spearing" skills and life & death battles versus vicious skunks. So here's the question. How nasty is it to skin one of these suckers out? Is there a trick to it like freezing it? If so will it stink up the freezer? Should I be asking this in the Taxi section??

Skin it underwater. Wearing gloves to your shoulders. And clothes you planned on burning anyway. Do it when the wife will be gone for a week or 10 days. (otherwise, YOU will be gone for a week or 10 days)

Trust me there is no way to skin it without getting stinky. My cousin tried it about 30 years ago and still get nauseous when he smells a skunk.

You'll need to carefully remove the scent gland. Get some gasoline and soak the skunk in it for 30 minutes and remove. Place it in a clearing in complete sunlight and light the skunk on fire. I like the picture idea.

If you do skin it you're a better man than a lot of us. Jam a bunch of Vicks up your nose wear a hazmat suit, full respirator and go to the woods.

Im not sure there is a good way. There is an old man up here that does it all the time. When he is in town, you can smell him before you see hjm.

Skin it like a coon. I have skinned many of them just don't squeeze the scent gland on both sides of anus. I fact if you just want to tube it , cut below tail and leave a patch of hair about 2 inches and cut across to both insides of legs. Once that is done it should skin like any other critter. Just don't squeeze the glands
Isn't the best way to save face to keep the lower part shut?

I implore you to proceed with your plan with the caveat that you start a new thread and post ongoing play-by-play action similar to the "Great Greyhound Bus Adventure of 2016"....I'll chip in $50 towards the mount if you do it..... I'm sure others here will likewise contribute....this skunk mount adventure thread could easily surpass Cody's Llama!

There was some guy on here a few years ago that was asking how to get the skunk smell out of his freezer. He had to have been single. I'm sure putting a skunk in the freezer would be a serious strain on a marriage.
