Hey guys,

Instead of hijacking someone elses thread I thought I would post my own.

Currently having a hard time deciding which scope to purchase for my new rifle. I would like it to be good at the 200-300 yard range and my budget is around $250-300 although i've found the following scopes for much cheaper and they both seem to be very good.

Nikon P-223 http://amzn.to/2h5mtw9
And
Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn http://amzn.to/2h1TcQ3

Do you guys have any recommendations other than these two scopes or do any of you own one of these scopes?

Thanks!

My advice, get a FFP (first focal plane) scope.

The two scopes you have up there aren't bad, but with 2nd focal plane scopes the sub tensions of the reticle change based on the magnification so you constantly have to do the math.

Check out this scope,

Athlon Talos BTR

It's FFP and has a lifetime warranty. I just bought an Athlon Argos and I'm very impressed with the glass clarity.

Cameralandny.com has a Minox ZA 5 HD 2-10x40mm on sale for 299, regularly about 550. That is a steal on a very fine scope!

Sighted in two inches high at 100, you should be about five inches low at 300. I don't see where much math is needed.

For that price range, get a Burris. Cabela's even has a MTAC 4.5-14 X 42 on sale for $250.

Tend to agree with RiverRider most folks for hunting applications are better off with SFP which are cheaper to buy so you usually get more for your dollar.

I agree, it's not impossible. I just personally don't like this method.

4 years ago I used to run a 3-9x42 SFP and sighted in two inches high at 100 yards. I had a shot on a hog at about 30 yards. My heart was racing, adrenaline going, I didn't know what to do so I just put it on his ear and shot. I skimmed the leg of the feeder, the bullet went over the hog.

It could have been a bad shot by me, and it could have been sighting in high, I really don't know. All I know is I prefer to hunt with a FFP scope. Mainly because if I see a deer at 200 yards I know it's .5 mils and hold where I want the bullet to go. 300 yards is 1.3 mils, 400 is 1.8. Anything 100 yards in I hold where I want the bullet to hit. I've shot deer at 215 yards and deer at 55 yards no problem with FFP because it gives me added confidence.

There's no way that sighting two inches high at a hundred yards caused that miss. Adrenalin, most likely.

It was definitely on the shooter unless the scope had been knocked way off and you didn't know it. Also, for a shot that close, you will actually shoot low because the bullet's trajectory is still below your line of sight though the scope. But since you had it sighted in 2" high at 100, you should have been just fine by placing the crosshairs right were you wanted the bullet to hit.

I'd go with a Fullfield II or the Minox from CameraLand.

Thanks for all the tips guys!

I did some more research over the weekend and stumbled across this site whilst google searching for the best scopes: Tango Tactics

It seems to have a good explanation in what to look for when choosing a scope and I quite like the sound of the VX-1 as that also comes with a lifetime warranty smile

This would be a much better choice than the VX-1 IMO.

Burris has no questions asked lifetime warranty.

Thanks is this the Burris scope you would recommend? Burris Fullfield Ii Riflescope I've got a $50 gift card to use up on amazon so would rather purchase it there to save a bit of money and use up the gift card.

Yes, but I would suggest going with a 44mm objective and a little more magnification to shoot out to 300. You should be able to stay within your budget. up

I agree with that the FFP scope suggestion. I have come to like tactical turrets for the ease of dialing or having a matched reticle and holding based off the mil marks on the reticle. Both are much more accurate than Kentucky windage. I know most people say minute of deer but I think that's BS, I want to know exactly where that bullet is going to hit and not just and estimated 6x6 area on a deer.

It doesn't take any math with a FFP scope and tactical turrets. Simply practice the shots to know where to hold or to turn the turrets and you are good to go. I have my scopes marked for every hundred yards but like to have a DOPE chart for every 25yards starting at the 25.

Good info, Ill look into getting a DOPE chart printed out and have a play when i get my scope.

Now after a bit more research I feel the best option is to go for a Vortex Crossfire 2 , it ticks so many of my boxes being, water, fog and shock proof, and it has a lifetime warranty like leupold and after reading multiple reviews on it many reviewers have said it has the quality of a scope in a much higher price range than it. It even was the best rated scope for the money from http://tangotactics.com

So yeah i think this is it, I just wanted to get your opinions on it before i push the buy button.

In the end it is your decision of course and you have to buy what floats your boat. I've mounted many Crossfires and to me they are grossly inferior to a Minox, Fullfield II or VX-1.

If you are set on Vortex then the next step up from the Crossfire II is a Diamondback and they are good scopes that I would recommend. Crossfires for me are even a pain to bore sight because the eyebox is so narrow.

I agree with booradley that I would skip over the crossfire. I haven't used it, but have played around with them in the store and it's probably the only vortex that I wouldn't recommend.

For what rifle? I have nikon 223, made for AR. Its small. It would be tough shot at 300.

I also have redfield revenge, very good for 150 bucks.
