I will be going on an Oryx hunt at the end of the month, and need to know a little about shot placement. the research I have done indicates that you need to pretty much shoot through the shoulder. Also has lead me to understand that shooting them behind the shoulder like one would do on a whitetail is actually considered a gut shot. Just wanted to get some other opinions. Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated

I shot one behind the shoulder @ 65 yards with a 30-06 and it ran 10 yards and piled up. Zero blood came out of him until we hung him at the skinning rack.

I shot mine with a 7MM when he was standing broadside right behind the shoulder and dropped him in his tracks. Similar in that no blood came out until we hung him. It was a nice clean shot too, no unnecessary damage to the meat.

Put the vertical cross hair right on the front leg, works every time. BTW that is exactly what they tell you to do at the pre-hunt meeting on White Sands Missile Range. This has worked for 6 Gemsbok that my family has taken.

Good luck on your hunt by the way. It's a great animal to get after and delicious meat.
