I made a trade earlier this year and got a West Texas mule deer hunt out of the deal. I put in about 6 days on the ranch and saw a lot of deer. I made it happen Thursday afternoon. We had a little snow on the ground and it was sure enough cold. I was in some really neat country and enjoyed every minute of it. I did most of my hunting from a high seat in a Ranger, and I walked the Sandhills for several hours one afternoon. I'm still sore from it.

We found this old guy as we come out of the Sandhills into a Mesquite flat. We never got a very clear look at him while he was on the move, but it was pretty obvious that he was a shooter. Couldn't have been happier with him when we got to see him up close. I'm no mule deer expert, but he definitely had some age on him. Huge old head on him, his G3's are as fat as his beams, and I couldn't believe the size of his chest cavity. I wasn't able to get him on a scale but my guess is over 200 lbs field dressed. Definitely a memory I will hold on to forever.

I'm going to get him mounted. He's the biggest deer I have ever killed. My rough score come up to 149, but I'm no Boone and Crockett expert. He's 23" wide.

That is about as good a Texas mulie as you'll come by. Congratulations. 'Been in that country; it takes an acquired taste, but it's still a special place. Great pictures! 'Not a fan of the hat, but hey, as long as you're comfortable. grin

You need to change your sigline. Obviously you are a good deer hunter. What a great mulie. Those sandhill bucks get abnormally large.

Hey man, I had to shed my lucky American felt for that red plaid hat when it got cold. Riding in a high seat in a Ranger when it's 25 degrees out is cold! I could not feel my hands when I pulled the trigger, and my ears were very thankful I had that ugly hat on!

He dang sure ain't your typical forked muley. The landowner told me almost all the bucks on one side of the ranch are like this, and the opposite side has more forks. No whitetail anywhere around, just a genetic thing specific to the area I guess.

The Sandhills or "dunes" I was in are something else. There is a stretch of them that runs into Texas and up into New Mexico. I-20 runs through them about 30 miles West of Odessa. The sand is solid white, and a lot of the hills are covered in shinnery oak. It's a little oak that doesn't get much more than knee high, but they make a lot of acorns.

Some of the Sandhills have no vegetation on them and have the waves in the sand like a picture of a desert. Pretty tough to walk through.

Really neat country. Wish I would have taken more pictures.

I've been thinking about changing it lol. When I made my account I had never killed a deer that I was really proud of, other than one ancient old ugly cull. I've now killed respectable deer 3 years in a row, and I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. I like mass and age, and this deer has got it.
