Also might be a good time to get an AR10/Sig 716, and a suppressor, and tell her you are doing it for her... BRILLIANT
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

Your chance of success will be much better with a more versatile 243.

I know I'll catch flack about it, but I have killed a few with the Sig P226 in 9mm... granted all but one had "pre-existing conditions", but it's a proven deer killer as well.

Nope must be 300 win mag or larger to kill whitetail, they're extremely tough.

Your chance of success will be much better with a more versatile 243. Why? A good shot with a .223 will kill them just as dead as a good shot with a .243. A bad shot with a .243 will not be any more effective than a bad shot with a .223. Until you get into 150+ grain bullets going over 3000 fps, they are all pretty much the same when using the same type of bullets.

Why do people mention how far a deer runs after the shot? If you shoot high shoulder on a Texas whitetail, it's dropping in its tracks whether you shoot .223 or .300 win mag You cannot Educate Uneducated People... On a side bar..Got some good Rain in Edwards County last night JMalin More falling right now. Bucks were really moving this past week, we're just missing an entire age class of 5.5 year olds. Future looks good though. I probably won't get back out that way until January.

I started all of my kids out with the same .223 and never lost a deer. All shots were within 100 yds or so. When they got older moved them up to a .270 wsm. I've shot .243's that kicked like a mule.

I shoot a 6mm and it's all about shot placement.
I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

It will kill a deer. I shoot most of my deer with a 22-250 and would suggest you look at moving up at least to the 22-250. You have to understand that your margin of error gets smaller with the smaller round. If you go this way make sure you buy a large pile of bullets and spend some time at the range with her or you will be crawling around the woods looking for blood all night. I have a rem 700 SPS in .243 that is light, easy to handle and has little to no recoil. I think the .243 is a better choice. At the end of the day shooting a deer with a .223 is like driving a car with your feet. It can be done, but that doesn't make it the best idea you ever had.

The question is almost always asked in such a way the answer has to be yes. Will it kill a deer? Of course. But it's an especially poor round for kids because it has little margin for error and requires good shot placement. Folks baby their kids these days - if a kid can shoot a .223, they can shoot a .243. Which is so much better for deer hunting it's not even funny. Your point about the .22-250 vs. .223 for adults is well-taken also. Same bullet, basically same recoil - traveling 500+ fps faster.

If you feed your 223 good ammo it will make it a legit deer killer. Anywhere that you would hit a deer with a 243, 270 etc. it will do the same. My SIL has shot many deer with ours and made mostly very good shots and had great luck. On the other hand we have taken her on some hunts that were very cold and required her to shoot from some positions that were not made for her resulting in a few less than desirable shots. We have yet to loose a deer with it and it has produced full penetration with a trackable blood trail to any animal ever shot with it. I load 60 grain nosler partitions for it and they WORK!
Is it the best choice? Probably not. If they can handle and accurately shoot a 30-30, 243, 7mm08, 270 or any other larger gun i would probably consider it better, but if they are comfortable with a 223 it is sufficient for the task. As with anything you should strive for good shot placement and likely the low recoil of the 223 will help that occur.

Until you get into 150+ grain bullets going over 3000 fps, they are all pretty much the same when using the same type of bullets. It's not about bad shots. Bad shots are bad shots no matter the caliber. It's about good shots and/or marginal shots. A .243 is a more effective round than a .223. They are not "pretty much all the same using the same type of bullets until you get to 150 grain". A 100 or 105 grain projectile is more effective than a 55 or 60 grain projectile. Period. "All the same", ".223 same as .300 for high shoulder shot", "all about shot placement", yadda, yadda, yadda..... Amazing to see physics ignored as if it doesn't exist and every caliber from .223 up to .270 lumped in as "all the same" whenever these threads come up. Amazing calibers like the .243, 25 calibers, 6/6.5mms were even developed and are so popular when a .223 is all we need. Gosh, who knew??

6.8 would be a better choice for her with very light recoil like the 223.

I don't disagree with you overall, but saying "Anywhere you would hit a deer with a .243, 270, etc. it will do the same." is simply wrong. You shoot a deer with a .243 or .270 and the same bullet, you will have much different results than shooting it with a .223.

What about a .222?
Where is the love for that? How about the .221 fireball?
A .22 hornet is a deer killing machine for sure, it's just about where you hit'rm
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

243 is a much better choice. When my boy was 6 he killed his first deer with a 243. She could handle a 243 just fine. I'd use core locks or fusions.
223 will work but it's not forgiving if she doesn't hit the deer perfect. 243 doesn't kick and will be sufficient. It's a no brainier
