So at the beginning of the season I was getting busted left and right. I have changed up my hunting area and am very scent control minded now. I blacked out my blind so I can't be silhouetted and still the last two times I have seen this momma and fawns she blows like crazy. It is different these times though. Instead of blowing once and bolting she is blowing like 5 or 6 times in a row and still hangs out. Now both times one of her fawns was away from where she was. Will a doe blow if they are scared that one of their fawns is separated from them? Tonight after she blew I heard another deer walking in from the opposite direction, it was too dark though to see it. Will a doe blow if a buck is coming in and her fawns are there? I don't want to shoot her because she is still with her fawns but if there is no reason for her blowing other than me getting busted then I have had enough of her.

I will shoot any doe that blows at me regardless of fawns. The fawns will be fine this time of year. Is she getting down wind of you? I have had does that busted me once that will come back and always blow even if they don't get down wind of me. I would try to take her out if possible.

Tonight she was upwind and walked around and did nothing until she went in the woods and she blew 5 times in a row. One of the fawns were still out in the open, that's why I wasn't sure if they will blow if they are separated. I didn't want to do it but she is about to be meat in my freezer

The last time she did it I was hunting in a different section of woods and she walked off and the fawns stayed. All of a sudden she blew 5 or 6 times and the fawns stayed where they were and she came charging back in. None of them ran off

I think an abundance of scent control is really just a feel good thing for a hunter. (I have seen guys obsessed with it). You can put on a gallon of that stuff and wear all sorts of scent block clothes and camo, and you will still be busted as long as you are breathing. But that also depends on your deer and what they are accustomed to smelling around a blind. I walk my blinds often. I check the feeder ever time I am there, and walk the pen perimeter. I want them to be as used to me being there as they are the feeder being there. And then hunt the wind. I have seen does blow at other deer, hogs, and even a bird. Some are just more skittish. The smart does you will never see. The dumb ones stand 30 yards in front of me and snort. If I am thinking about shooting a doe, they make the decision easy.

They blow to clear their nostrils so they can get a better whiff. It also serves to put other deer on alert.
I once had a tree stand on a hill side. Old doe came down the hill behind me and caught scent of me. She stood back there blowing for several minutes. I waved my arms, my hat, clapped my hands. She wouldn't leave. Finally got fed up and shot her through her ol' floppy ear with a 25-06. Last I saw of her, she was running up the hill shaking her head.

I think I am going to shoot her next time I see her. I think the fawns should be old enough to make it

They'll blow at you, your smell, your trail, predators, dead deer, other live deer, livestock, you name it.

The oldest doe I have seen at our place would blow at anything but never make any evasive moves. Guess she was protecting her herd. I should have shot her but was so big didn't look like a tasty deer. She was like a buck with no bone. Maybe I'll see her this year.

I usually have sounds of a couple of bucks snorting blowing out my windows every hunt. I just cant seem to get the lean down for the doe noise! But I've had does in the past that would do that and each one of them made excellent sausage!
I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

Its not unusual for an old nanny Doe to do that. Sometimes stand off 100 yds. or so (often back in the cover) and 'blow' and stomp their hooves. It serves as a 'warning' to everything else in the area.
Once, you've been 'busted' it seems they are ALWAYS suspect of that area and if they even THINK you are there, they will 'alert'.
We always take sentry Does out of the herd (legally of course).
One other thing that can set them off...is the use of scents, 'Doe in heat' etc....

I use to hunt on a friends place outside of Fredericksburg. There was a doe I swear would blow right after the feeder went off every morning to scare the other deer off, then her and her fawn would go in and have all the corn to themselves. Not once did I ever think she winded me or even look my way.

We walk into our blinds instead of drive. I have seen several times deer moving along like normal and when they cross the path I walked they will stop sniff like crazy look around and blow. Sometimes they leave sometimes they don't. If you walked in that area could be it.

Great topic. I have a very noisy doe also. Don't want to shoot her because for last two years she has givin twins. I have tried everything to shut her up. Sent control, move blind further away, getting in blind earlier etc. Finally decided that she is just a loud mouth B$^%@ that surely no buck would pay any attention to. Last Sunday she came in yappin. I could even hear her 150 yards away still screaming as she left. Guess I was right about her because 15 min. after she left I shot a very nice 10 point. She's now welcome to my blind anytime she pleases.

The blowing doe is about like the older busy body old woman in the neighborhood. The older lady listens to everything and then spins her own story because she can't remember the exact truth. The doe isn't for sure what is going on, but she knows something is not right and she is going to let everyone else know about it.

And don't think that does are the only ones that do it. I've seen bucks do it too.

Ive shot the 2 on my wall now while smoking in the stand and not giving a darn about scent, other than wind direction. Scent soap, clothes, etc is all for $$$$$ making imo.

I've been hunting for over half a century and the deer that blow are usually the old momma does. They will be the ones that pick out the slightest thing that is out of place and will scent check the wind constantly. They start the foot stomping and then start blowing and alert all the deer in the area. Those are the one's that I try to target first, and they can be harder to kill than an old mossback buck.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Totally agree, I'm seeing a lot more deer this year and I've been walking around much then I did last year.

With superior vision, hearing and sense of smell don't kid yourself. YOU HAVE BEEN BUSTED and that cagey whitetail is telling you so. I believe a blowing deer is highly agitated and hyper alert. Blowing is a warning and also an attempt to elicit a response. As soon as she determines you are a threat she is gone. On numerous occasions I have observed deer on hyper alert needing a "confirmation " before departing the scene....but not always. They seem to react much quicker to smell.
