Just wondering if really decent nightvision can be had for $500 or less in a monocular or binocular?
By decent I guess I mean being able to identify a coyote at maybe 300 or 400 yards, not being able to count his teeth.
Currently on a "Don't Need to Know" basis.

Yes, but not the distance your looking at. Maybe the 100-200 range.

ATN X-Sight 2 with a good IR illuminator works very well.

100 - 200 yards is probably enough... specific brand/model recommendations welcome. Thanks.

It depends how close to 500 your talking about. Contact Mike Tillman to see if he has a Resolute available. 400 yards is thermal range imho.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

Only thing that will consistently positive ID at that range is high end magnified and illuminated get 3 NV. You're talking 3-5K for something that'll do that. Now if you're wanting something cheap get a Sightmark Photon XT plus a decent illuminator and then call them in a little closer. You should be able to see them pretty good at 200 or so with a good illuminator.
Thermal is great for detection but you have to be very experienced with it to positively ID critters at those range. And that's with high end 640 units and even then a positive ID with thermal at that range is difficult.

The cheap T20's work great. I've got a couple of them.

I think the cheap T20s are crap. I don't get to hunt much, so I want my tools to be effective. The SHL 50LR is not that expensive and is very high quality. It outperforms the T20s by at least two-fold.
