Is it ok to put live ammo in a vibrating polisher? I have done it in the past, but now am wondering if it is a smart idea.

There has been a big debate on that. From the vibrations breaking down the powder into smaller pieces and increasing it to an unsafe burn rate to primers getting bumped from other projectiles.
I have never experimented with it so I don't know if it is true or internet regurgitation.
But, an easy way to clean up older rounds is by rubbing fine steel wool on them. You can also get a $3 Krazy Kloth which works great. I use the cloth to clean brass when reloading in the field with no access to electricity.

Thanks, guess I won't be doing it. I have some ammo I loaded before I got my polisher, and sure would like to pretty it up a little.

I wouldn't do it.
There is a coating on the powder granules that decreases it's burn rate. The more you agitate the powder, the more likely it is you could rub that coating off, and thus increase it's burn rate.
Given the theory behind it, it might just create a very dangerous situation.

Dangerous, I don't know. However, you're going to ding the lead up.

I wouldn't do it. I don't think the primer could go off like that, but I don't want to find out the hard way that it can.
I never even thought about the powder being effected.

I wasn't worried about the primer going off, it isn't a tumbler, but the powder getting messed up makes sense.

Sure......if it's like when I was a wee little boy.......when I got new tennis shoes, they made me run more gooder so shiny bullets MUST shoot better.

I don't even understand why the hell you would even want to think of doing that.

A little Turtle Wax might not hurt........besides, you'll be the envy of the range with shiny bullets.

Mainly because when I put my brass that I just tumbled next to my old ones they looked like crap. No different than wanting a clean gun.

No one has said it so I will. If the factories tumble live ammo, why can't you? http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=156750&highlight=tumbling+live+ammo In post #17 Ten X Ammo (they make alot of cowbay action ammo) evens chimes in to say they have tumbled live ammo for over 30 years, no problem. In post #18 someone even did an accuracy/velocity comparison test. If your still worried about breaking down powder, then experiment with it yourself. Try tumbling a loaded cartridge for a while, then pull the bullet and compare the powder to untumbled. [/list]

Helo-
Thanks for letting me have fun here. I think you should be able to run it throught your polisher without problem. The factories do it before the round leaves that way they look nice and shiney as they await being adopted by its new foster parent.

Glad you brought some humor to the thread. I didn't know the factory did that. Glad to hear it, I just hate looking at my ammo and it looking bad, I guess I have a little Monk in me.

Adrian Monk, he has the TV show on Friday nights on USA. It is funny, because I don't mind my truck dirty, just hate looking at dirty brass.
