My dad took this 10 pt in early October and I offered to do a euro for him. It turned out well except I bleached it with chlorine - wish I had googled it before I started instead of after! I've asked the taxidermy section for advice on stabilizing it to prevent the skull plate from breaking. I'm thinking I can fill the joints with super glue. Check out the pics thus far.

I just did an Elk and used Hydrogen Peroxide. Took 30 quarts but it turned out real good. I soaked it for 4 days.

I'm no expert but have read bleach will disintegrate bone over time; maybe some of the experts can chime in on thoughts of sealing it with clear poly to help stabilize...

how did you clean the skull? The way I did my Elk was boil the skull and clean it, then soaked it in HP for 4 days, then and took a stiff plastic brush after it came out of the HP to final clean it, then sprayed it off with water. Before I put it in the HP I tied a thin strip of cotton fabric right under the horns pushed up against them so the HP would wick up to the bottom of the horns.

Unfortunately having 3 young kids in the house (1 newborn) I didn't put in the diligence before starting the process. This is my dads personal best so hoping I can salvage it.
I boiled it for 30 mins in water to get the meat off, that part of the process worked great.

I could not find the original article I read on skulls turning chalky/crumbling after bleach but I found this; hope it helps.
http://www.taxidermy.net/forum/index.php?topic=53420.5;wap2
Sometimes you get skulls that got chalky during preparation, usually due to using natron, chlorine or too highly concentrated peroxide. If you leave them like this, they'll keep crumbling away. Someone asked me how to restore such a skull, so I asked around, and a friend gave me this recipe I want to share with you all: First you take out the teeth if possible, and if not, cover them with rubber glue to protect them. Then you mix 2 parts of water with one part white glue (the kind you use to glue wood), hand-warm, and put the skull in for about half an hour. The warm diluted glue will get into all pores of the bone, and when it's dry the bone will be hard and smooth again, no longer crumbly. Then you glue the teeth back in or scrape away the rubber glue. Never tried this myself (don't have chalky skulls), but according to my friend it works well (the rubber glue was my own idea). One remark: you can't bleach a skull anymore after this procedure, so if the skull needs bleaching, do it before.
