So i stumbled on a freshly road-killed otter today. What's the law regarding taking it? I see a LOT of stuff about it being illegal in Texas, but every discussion I see relates to DEER. I've seen people saying other animals or exotics are legal. Anyone know the facts?

Not going to be legal, except for exotics maybe. Also for an otter it would require a CITES tag.

Yeah, with no salvage permit, I think you would be out of luck.

All over Lake Limestone. They steal fish out of your basket at night if you do not secure the lid.

If you have a trappers license I don't know how anybody would know the difference. If otters are legal to trap.

Again it is going to need a CITES tag. Those can only be obtained for animals legally harvested. Roadkill won't be a legally harvested animal IMO.

You can call Game Warden or Sheriffs department and ask for permission to take it. Friend uses antlers and skins for crafts, he has gotten permission to take deer killed on the road before.

Well picking up roadkill fur bearers is illegal in texas. If using for personal use then I'm sure a game warden is not going to hassle you for it. You only need to have the cites tags if your going to be crossing state lines with the animal or pelt in an unfinished state. If it's mounted or tanned your fine. There's some trappers in the north east part of the state that catch around 50 a year. Pretty common if your in good territory, they are pretty tough to flesh and smell like a basket of fish heads. Oily too

Oily too Game wardens will definitely hassle people who try to salvage a deer without a permit or permission, so I would not be so sure that they won't hassle a person for trying to salvage a river otter without a permit or permission and tag. As you said, it is illegal. It is best to assume that there will be a hassle and work to keep that from happening.
