Hope the rains put the harvest back some. The longer the wheat is up the better the pheasant crop.

Would I do any good going to Kansas to quail/pheasant hunt public land with no dog ?

Most of the people hunting pheasants on public land don't have pointing dogs. If you go early in the year you should have success. Go late and the birds are wary and may get up way ahead of you. Learn the township system and get a walk in hunting map when you get your license.

Flint Hills has most quail. West Kansas -- especially north will probably be better for pheasants. Be prepared to drive--be sure to get a wiha map. Look for crp near harvested crops. Kansas does not have near the quail Texas has. Just look for likely cover. If you are in crp and see a plum thicket check it out--quail like to loaf in them. Talk to the locals--many of them have private land to hunt so they will direct you to public hunting areas where they have seen birds. You probably won't have much luck asking farmers for permission--most farmers willing to let people hunt their land run commercial operations, save fields for friends and family or put their land in the wiha system.

Well have to disagree. The flint hills used to be great but not for the last 10 or 15 years. They are making some what of a comeback but not there yet. South central Kansas has by far the best quail hunting in the state and last year some areas bordered on what we had in Texas. The horseback trial on the Zbar ranch moved 15 to 25 coveys a day while setting up the courses. Private land is mostly leased to deer hunters or run commercial deer hunts. If you hit walk in land hit it early cause the good stuff gets hammered the first few weeks. You will have more luck with pheasants on walk in land from south central to the north west and everything in between.
