$300 and good bow just don't go together. You can get a bow for $300 but you will not be happy with it and you are getting what you pay for. If that is your limit then I would look at a good used bow, but you are still going to be pushing it.

Keep your eye out and add about $200 and you can get 4x the bow you would for 300. The 09's are just coming out, save your coin a little longer

As BIL said save a few more bucks and keep your eyes open. I can get you a good bow for around $400 but then you have to set it up then you will be looking at another $150 to $200. If you want me to help you out let me know.

These are just a few I would recomend closer to your price range. Just remember these are bare bow price. Then you would need to set it up.

I can get you a

Diamond Rock for $420
PSE Brute $410
PSE Nove $310
PSE Stinger $305
Browning Rage $305

Now if you want to save up a little change and get a top of the line bow I can get you an Elite or higher end Diamond. You are looking around $600 +

Lets say $800 is my top end spending limit. That includes everything I would need for the hunt, and i mean everything.

I can set you up for that with an Elite GT500 or a Diamond Black Ice. Two of the best bows I have shot in a long time.

I would stay away from used unless you know how well the bow was cared for. If you do some looking you can probaly find a new '08 model bow for about $500. I found a new 101st for $450 last month.

Saint if you watch you will see that some bow dudes have to have the latest greatest best bow there is each year whether they need it or not. Sometimes you can see a bow that was $1200 down to $5-700 fully dressed out.
A couple things I would recommend is Know exactly your draw length. Get it done buy a professional shop being leary of the Cabela's and Basspros. Have cash in hand for the right deal.
Shoot a couple brands, some are night and day. Some are so bad I wouldnt even go hunting with it.
Try a couple different releases, same as a good trigger on a gun, get a good one you will have it forever, belt strap not velcro
Good luck to you

I recently got into bowhunting and was in the same situation you are in. I bought a PSE Nova Extreme out of the bargain cave at Cabela's. It was a 06 model and I bought it last spring. It was still new. I paid less than $200 for it and it was a complete package. It is nothing fancy but I love it. Whenever I can afford to go with a higher end model, I will stick with PSE and prolly get a Dream Season. PSE has been great to me. I am going to Missouri in November and I have no reservations about taking my bow up there to attack one of those brute whitetails!!!

Wow! I was going to mention my PSE nova but when I got mine they (PSE) was the best. I'm very happy with mine. They are a lot bigger and better bows nowdays. I paid under 200$ for mine then added and changed sites and rest along the way. I ordered mine from the sportsmans guide. I started out hunting with a bear recurve and instinct shooting (no sights).

I disagree about the used bows. Some people just have to up grade every year or two. Figure out what you want and draw length. Then start watching differant sights. I picked up a Mathews Switchback XT fully loaded for $550. And it is a great bow. There is a loaded DXT on this sight right now. You can save hundreds of dollars going this way. And archery is expensive, save where you can.

I disagree about used bows too. I buy used bows all the time off of Archery Talk. I have never had a problem with any of the ones I have bought. And I buy a bunch of bows every year.

I didn't think my first post would be about bows ...but I disagree with the the statement about a good bow not being had for $300!
Heck these guys forget what was on the market decade past...not like we are toting Allens anymore...everything is good compared to that.

Consider this nice package from Bass Pro...
RedHead Kronik

Several options ...and yes even used bows that you could likely shoot before you buy if you get it from a local in your area.
My Current bow is "Used" a Matthews DXT! It was 3 weeks old and a friend wanted me to have it so I battered some old C&R Rifles I had for it. He ordered himself another DXT. I made out good as he left the Trophy hunter Drop away rest on it for me too! My bow i had prior to that was a Martin Cheetah...I traded it for a Ruger SP101..as I didn't need it anymore.when you ever get a Matthews you'll know why.
You can trade sell swap barter....it still all works!

The way things should be are not often the way things are.....
