Video as promised. I was not sure of the horizontal white line that ran across the ATN's display? Dead pixels or a F/W issue?

After seeing this video with the white line going across the screen and the comparison with the pulsar...plus the "dead on arrival" issue Hetman had with his new ATN HD out of the box, I have determined that ATN just needs to close its doors and give up. Their product of late is just JUNK! Their digital night vision X sight was and still is a nightmare and now this. I currently have the older Thor 336 thermal and have had no issues...but it will be my last ATN product. Way too many other choices to roll the dice...in my opinion of course. lol
Thanks for the comparison!
There's nothing better than killin it and grillin it!

Did you manage to figure out what was causing the white line and also the shut-down? Thanks for posting and looking forward to a hunting episode with the Thor-HD if you can keep it running.

After owning the original X-Sight and experiencing all the glitches, and now this, it's pretty clear that ATN has no idea what they are doing on the software side of things.

I was not sure of the horizontal white line that ran across the ATN's display? Dead pixels or a F/W issue? Archer, that is what is called "ATN Syndrome." It used to just be an X-Sight isssue, but it is apparent that the issue occurs to multiple lines of their products and seems to be widespread system QC issues. How the heck did that scope ever get beyond QC? Let me quote Sachal of ATN on this from the other thread on what he said about Thor HD's crappy videos... you can enjoy it for what it is http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/6279400/3

With that being said I will not be buying an atn product anytime soon based in the x sight fiasco. I want to see some review of the sig echo

Well this is disconcerting...white line through the middle of the view and then shut off with no clear reason why. It seems the thermal sensor is about on par with the Apex, but the field of view for what "should" be comparable scopes is not quite the same (not that I expect it to be though). It seems the thor HD has a much wider field of view based on the early videos which also means you might need a much higher mag level to actually hunt with. Hard to tell at this stage.
Having said all that, aside from all the other issues with the white line and shut down, the view through both scopes seemed pretty similar so that's a positive...

I will produce more videos next week. Next stop will be on my AR15..we shall see how it reacts to recoil. More specifically, the "money shot" per say!

Yes, both units are 384X288.
There is a contrast control internal to the Menu structure, however no external controls. I'm still searching for a brightness control.

On a side note, I had the brightness control too high on the Apex XD38A, next video I'll correct that.

It is important for people to realize the brightness doesn't mean a better scope. I appreciated the side by side, and esp the distance call outs as that gives a much better feel for the detection and usable range of the scope than brightness...
my understanding is the thor HD you used is a 1.25X and the Apex is a 1.45X
with similar sized sensors per specs (384x288) that should in theory give a very similar picture, although the Apex appears about another .5-1.0X bigger picture. Not a huge thing for short range hunting but could be a differenc emaker past 100 yards. I would love to see the difference between the 2X Thor HD and the 1.25X you have, as well as the 640 core 2X vs either of the before mentioned models. I think for my personal use I would want at least 2X based ont he video shown or possible more...

Nito, can you get them more in line with brightness and contrast? I don't the string availability for the thor but it's hard to make fair comparison with on so much darker that the othe. Or perhaps when you them set up on a target run through the brightness and contrast settings for people to see. Just a thought.
I know after a little while of using my scanner I have to change my settings because of the eternal blackout that's caused by looking through the screen and I don't know yet how that translates to video.

Not a huge thing for short range hunting but could be a differenc emaker past 100 yards. There isn't just the difference in magnification, but also lens size. The 1.25x Thor HD has a smaller lens (38mm Pulsar versus 25mm ATN). Much like with regular optics, everything else being the same, the bigger lens should produce a better image than a smaller lens and that will also make a difference at distance. So in the comparison, the Pulsar was bound to look somewhat better with a larger lens and more magnification, but such particulars were lost because of the giant flaw of the line across the screen on the ATN.

Not withstanding this pretty major issue, I would really like to see something from a thor hd scope with a bigger lens/sensor and a higher native mag...I think the particulars are there for a good scope, just keep getting missed by the obvious issues in the initial delivery models (i.e. white line, random shut down, not starting up).

I apologize for not following up sooner! I just got back from the 2016 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Louisville, KY. Here is a quick video I threw together. I am heading out to sight in the ATN Thor on one of my AR15's. Also, I'll do another side by side video tonight. Pulsar Apex XD38A = turn the brightness control down ATN Thor-HD = turn the contrast control up. (((if I can find that contrast control)))

Archer, its been my experience when calibrating thermal units you have to cover the front lens with something of uniform thermal radiancy (i.e. your hand or the lens cover itself) in order to get a proper calibration. By pressing the calibration button while lens is uncovered, all you are doing is "burning" the image currently in the view into the sensor and ruining your image quality.
If this has changed in recent software updates or newer thermal units, I stand corrected.

(((if I can find that contrast control))) Couple of pointers, if you connect your scope to a TV monitor with a hdmi cable, you will see the menu appear on the TV screen and it will be much easier to see and record everything. Second, the contrast and brightness are two different things. The brightness will only control the brightness of the display. Whereas the contrast control the output of the image.
