I bought a new toy Thursday from a friend that is moving overseas and cannot take any Fire arms with him. It is a new never fired Savage 93 R17HMR that has been sitting in his safe for 6 years. Took it to lease and sighted in in Saturday morning. Since I did not know what ammo this rifle liked I started with the - CCI A17-17grain @2650fps. Using a Shaky shooting bench at the lease I sighted in a 100yds and holding a 3/4inch group( gun is capable of much more but not off that POS shooting bench) I had checked the trigger before leaving home and it was breaking clean @ 3lb. Started off hunting with it Saturday morning & shot#1 smoked a crow @ 100yards. went down to my Pig hunting area & did not see anything except some squirrel crawling thru the varmint cage of the feeders stealing corn. Shot #2 - one less corn thief @ 80 yards Saturday evening sitting on tripod in my Pig hunting area not seeing much of anything except Birds/doves & hawks hunting the doves on the feeder. Had a hawk wing past me about 5foot away(pretty cool) It was getting close to 8pm and out of the blue 4 pigs just appeared on my feeder. Did not even see them come in(so much for paying attention) They were lined up side by side in a row ( at this time I was wishing for my AR-10/.308) would have been interesting to see how many pigs a 150grain would go thru . I picked out the pig on the end closest to me & put a shot #3 -.17HMR round between the Ear and front of shoulder. Pig drops and the other 3 haul [censored]. The pig I shot was doing the pig bicycle & making zero noise. It dropped with its back toward me & I put another .17HMR (shot#4 for the day)in the neck below base of skull. I don't think it was needed but better safe than sorry. Pig turned out to be a 125lb Sow. I am not telling everyone they should use a 17HMR to hunt pigs and any shot besides a CNS would have a wounded pig running off I was quite impressed in how lethal the 17HMR is . First 4 shots Saturday was a Kill. I will be using this quite often while varmint hunting this summer. 308 case / 223 case / loaded 17 HMR round - 17grain @ 2650fps

Since I did not know what ammo this rifle liked I started with the - CCI A17-17grain @2650fps. Just a quick note. I recently chronographed a bunch of A17 ammo and CCI 17 gr. TNT. The A17's averaged 2710 fps (with a high of 2732). The TNT's were over 2600 fps. This from a 20" barrel on my CZ-455 Varmint. I don't get the best accuracy using the A17 ammo, but each rifle will be different. Most rifles shoot the .17HMR pretty accurately, in fact...I think accuracy is really determined by the quality of the ammo, not the accuracy potential of most rifles chambered for it. Good shooting on that pig!

I love the .17 for young shooters. No recoil, accurate, and teaches them bullet placement over shock. Here is my 7 year old son, with his 1st hog, with a .17 HMR, put in the ear at 90 yards. He couldn't have been happier, or Dad more proud.

Great job. I haven't used a 17 for hogs typically when I use rimfire I use 22 mag, but looks like you laid the smack down. Good job.

Nice! Way to lay the smack down on em. 17hmr is a fantastic round.

Great job. I haven't used a 17 for hogs typically when I use rimfire I use 22 mag, but looks like you laid the smack down. Good job. When I was a kid I always had my .22 long and wanted a .22 mag so bad. I ended up buying one for my middle boy (and me) about a year ago and every time I am somewhere that sells ammo I look for .22 mag and I buy every box I find. In the last year I think I have been able to buy about 10 boxes. Those dang guns are worthless without ammo haha!!! Every time I look though I find an abundance of .17 HMR ammo...I have had my eye on a Savage that has a similar stock to my .204 Savage... After seeing this post, I am getting the itch for it again! That sounds like a damn good day!
