Despite a shot to the neck that penetrated through some 20-22" inches of flesh, undoubtedly through the heart area (but not the lungs), this hog still managed to run 20 yards or so. To date, this is probably the largest hog I have taken solo and solo was unfortunate because I am going to have to go back tomorrow in order to try to recover the sucker.

270 lbs and being solo, the only option is to rope'em and drag'em - good video! It got a little gory there at the end when a pint of fluid expelled from the exit would as he flopped rearward..

Brian: Good shot, and good vid. When I shot my huge hog last year, I was also solo. I had to chain pull it with my tractor. With the mud in the creek bed, you are going to have a tough time. Be careful. Tom

Tom, it is the poison ivy that concerns me most. I may cut it apart and haul it up in sections.

It got a little gory there at the end when a pint of fluid expelled from the exit would as he flopped rearward.. I had to run the video in slow motion to notice it. I originally thought that was a leg flicking, but you are right. That was blood coming out the exit wound.

Whew! That's a big one. At least, around here in central Texas it would sure be considered large. I now bring a two wheel hand truck along when I hunt to move 'em, and it sure comes in handy. It's a little difficult to maneuver over rough ground though, and might not work well where you were when you shot that one. Tell Angry Bird Thanks! for the shout out. I'm hoping to be released for limited walking in a few more weeks and then graduate back into regular activities (for me that's hog hunting, my wife is anxious for me to take her dancing again).
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

Congrats! That pig got air when he flipped backwards into the creek. Nice cutters on that boar.

how do you know it was 270lbs if you hadn't even gotten it out of the brush to weigh it? Congrats on the hunt, nice pig. But you'd have to he one HELL of a boy to drag 270lbs of dead weight up outa that creek by yourself. I know I know....I'm being a kill joy.

For some strange reason the link for this video isn't showing up so I went you your YouTube channel to see it. Initially watched the wrong one, but heard your commentary on the sow in that one doing "the Curly shuffle" upon introduction to your Grendel round. That is the best description I've heard on how to describe that activity. Charlie

Just an honest question, why bother retrieving it? Seems like it could just be left and let the critters feed on him, would this be bad?

Yeah, I don't like the idea of leaving the carcass in the stream either, especially when it is only about 15 yards from one of my favorite tripod hunting stands. A buddy met me for extracting the hog from the creek. It took over 100 feet of tow cables all connected together, LOL. The bad news is that it broke one of his cutters. Errr. I opened up the entry wound and it was nothing special, nor was it expected to be. Opening the exit wound was pretty neat. So there was a pretty massive soft tissue wound under the skin that was just mush. I probed the wound toward the head and decided to peel back more flesh.... The wound was massive, but in part because what you are seeing is a cross section of part of the long axis of the wound. However, what is really interesting is that when I probed the wound further, I encounter ribs that were broken and missing a portion (gapped). It would appear that after traveling some 14-16" through soft tissue, the frangible Berger bullet that was supposed to have come apart violently starting at 3-5" was still intact enough to completely blast through 3 ribs and notching a 4th rib before exiting the body. In other words, the round appears to have performed much like a typical hunting bullet that blasted through 3 and half ribs..

That girth measurement calculation is for domestic hogs. For their size domestic hogs are incredibly heavier than feral hogs. for comparison a domestic hog and a feral hog of similar proporitons for height and length....the domestic pig probably weighs 75%-100% more than the feral.
I know they can get big. but I've killed a lot of hogs and spent some time talking to people who've killed a lot more hogs than I have. In the wild you will seldom see a feral hog weigh over 250lbs live weight. I'd bet the one you killed was somewhere between 175-190lbs live weight. He just doesn't look proportionately large enough to have been any bigger. for grins you should try your calculation on a couple hogs that you also actually hang on a scale.
the largest feral hog I ever saw killed was a big boar that was raised in captivity for 5yrs. fed a diet of anything and everything he could eat, an experiment just to see how big he would get. when he was killed he field dressed 265lbs (we weighed him after he was gutted). was probably around 300lbs live weight. and he filled up the back of a short-bed pickup. he was the biggest animal I've ever seen.
I don't like to get down on anyones hunt. its just crazy to hear people talk about all the 300lbs hogs they shoot. if you look at the texas big game awards every year, places that pay cash money for largest hog contests. entries off multi thousand acre high protein year round fed ranches....the largest hogs that take first place every year seldom go over about 275lbs.

you will see some hogs out there called "heritage pigs" these are domestic hogs with old world breeding that make them look hairier and more like a feral. they will weigh heavier, but they are not wild hogs.

Nope. I have compared 20-25 hogs against the measurement and a scale and I have only had one that did not match the prescribed estimate closely and it was a small hog. Texas Lawman has also done a bunch of tests between the tape and scale. It is funny that for all the claims of how the proportions are wrong, the tape measurement works very well. Well dude, we taped the 322 lb hog and we scaled the hog, as seen in the video. It was that big. Let's see, 310, 364, and 399 lb winners from Wise County... http://thehuntinggame.com/contest/hog-contest/

You are partly right and partly wrong. You are right about the calculation being for domestic hogs. And you are right on many many people over estimating hogs weight I stopped posting my hogs weights because I got tired of all the comments only 290 my brother killed a 500 pound sow comments lol. I have now killed well over 2000 hogs with a rifle, and trapped many more than that, with all those hogs the biggest was 320 pounds. Out of all those hogs only five now have been over 300 pounds. Several hundred have been in the 250 to 290lbs range most are under 200 pounds. But even though you are right about the calculation being for domestic hogs it is accurate for feral hogs also. I measured just over 100 hogs and weighed them on a certified scale only two were out of the tolerances. A very pregnant sow, and a sick boar were the two anomalies. The sow was heavy and the boar was lighter. There were several other people who took part in the experiment on another forum all got he same results.

Is it true that 60% of a hog's weight is deer corn in the belly?
