I think I probably should. There's always something to learn, and Litz is a good one to pay attention to.

In Dallas on a Monday and Tuesday just flat wouldn't work for me. I will just have to settle for reading his book again.

Wow, was this seminar awesome!!!! I just got back from 2 days of information over load. EVERYTHING was talked about. After the seminar, Bryan Litz had an open round table discussion tonight where we talked about anything that we wanted. It lasted for over 2.5 hours. Lots of amazing information and experience discussed.

As slow as I type it would take me three days to put all the great info into a post. I can say it was it was everything I thought it would be and a lot more. Very interactive environment ,very well run.

It was great to meet you as well Chad. That was one aspect that I did expect as when you get that many folks together that all have a passion for shooting there is lots of opportunity for exchanging info and experiences.

What was interesting, was Bryan doesn't anneal any of his reloaded brass. The various studies from his testing and the annealing companies' testing are a little different. One of the main things I liked was the information provided about bullets going into the transonic (from about 1340 fps to 1100 fps). This is a very important transition and your bullet stability is critical at this point. We talked about 3 guys shooting 308 Win bolt guns with 175 SMK side by side. One guy was running a short stubby 14" bolt gun with an 8" twist. He was getting repeated hits at 1350 yards where the other slower twist 308's were very random in their hits. It all had to do with stabilizing the 175 more as it goes through the transonic speeds.

How can you stabilize more as it goes transonic? It's more of a be better or overstabilized when you get to the transonic zone. If you are borderline the transition might not be consistent.

This is good information. Especially when wanting to push a bullet as far as it will go. I've always had 1115 fps as a mark. Once under that it was not stable. The fact that I need to look at the higher velocity (1340 fps) tells me the real distance a round is still controllable, and maintains the stability for repeated hits. I need to look at the ballistics of what my 7mm 180 gr was doing at 1575 yards last month. Good stuff, Chad! Thanks for sharing.

How can you stabilize more as it goes transonic? You start the bullet out more stable. For example, 3 guys were shooting 308 Win bolt guns running 175 SMK ammo. One was shooting a short stubby 14" barrel with an 8" twist. The other 2 were shooting regular 308 Win with like 18" and 20" barrels, 10" twist and 11.25" twist. They were shooting all the way out to 1350 yards. The shooter shooting the 14" bolt gun with the 8" twist was getting repeatable hits where the other 2 shooters were not getting hardly any, and were much farther off target. So, how would a 14" barrel launching a 175 SMK at a much slower speed be able to do this... twist rate. The 8" twist stabilizes the 175 SMK better through the transonic than the 10" and 11.25 twist, even though they were going faster. Also, when you shoot into the transonic, Litz has calculated you need a stability factor of 2.0 (at this time of flight, not a 2.0 muzzle stability) to help maintain good stability through the transonic. And even then it's not guaranteed. There was a lot of discussion on this topic, and the simple answer is to shoot it and see. Then you will know. He talks about this in his custom drag modeling of the BC of the bullets. I'm building a 300WM necked down to shoot the 195 Hybrid and using an 8" twist, which he said should work fine (should!!). So we will see!

Chad,
is the 7/300 WM the same as 7 Mashburn?

Hey Jeff,
I don't think it is. I think the Mashburn is based on the 300 H&H round, blown out. All I'm doing is necking down Norma 300 WM brass with my Redding 300 WM neck die to the right size to hold a 7mm bullet.

On annealing they were in a nutshell checking to see if annealing would give you lower more consistent SD's With cartridges in .223/.308/300WM they could not show annealing helped at all. It may help your brass last longer but did not appear to help precision of ammo. On the other hand flash hole deburring did appear to help slightly on SD consistency. Although there was one cartridge that it did not help on until they changed primers IIRC. Chad may have to correct me but also Flash hole work did not help the 300 WM. There was definitely info overload.

Always seemed like one of the most logical rounds to make and 300 WM brass seems to be more consistently available than most. Never understood why it has not become a standard SAAMI round. What kind of velocity are you expecting? Good luck with it and please share the results.
