Quality materials, equipment and operators aren't cheap. You can still buy cheap knives just about anywhere if you need something that'll just do.

I was at Academy the other day and was shocked at how *low* the prices were on brands like kershaw, gerber and schrade compared with what I paid 10-20 years ago.

The TransPacific deal will fix that.

A lot of things are overprices now days, but you can still buy good pocket knives like Gerber and Schrade at a reasonable price. My Gerber model isn't made any more but the Schrade I carry is under $ 25.00. Mine is over 25 years old and still in good shape.

That's why....lots of things were cheaper "years ago".....

Have no idea what I paid but still have the same smallish pocket knife I bought at Stripling Blake lumber company in Austin. Would have been 1970. Had to have a pocket knife for all cord we used for the load tying and cutting. Still in great shape and for sure doesn't look 46 years old. I'd be plum heart broken if I were to lose that thing now.

I have an everyday carry pocket knife I bought in 1988....I feel the same way.....can't imagine not having it in my pocket and would be crushed if I ever lost it......almost "lost" it on a flight to Amsterdam in the early 90's.....security tried to take it.....I missed that flight and caught the next flight in order to take it back to the car instead of surrendering it to those nimrods.... this knife cost me a penny(so as not to cut the friendship) as it was a gift from a good friend of mine....still friends and still have the knife

Your Schrade was made in the USA, a few years ago Schrade manufacture was moved to China. A lot of Gerber knives are also made there IRRC Buck moved manufacture to China and slumping sales and customer complaints got it moved back here. Notice on Buck packaging there is an American flag on the knives being made in the USA, those without it are China made.

My grandfather always said the perfect pocket knife had a "buckhorn handle and a Barlow blade".
For years I carried a good Camillus 3 blade that my Dad's best friend gave me. It was his castrating knife and the main blade is very worn. Lots of history, I suppose. I retired it for a Buck, parked the buck for a Gerber, then parked the Gerber for a Benchmade, which is excellent.

I carried a Case 380 for years. I went on a duck hunt and left it laying on a picnic table after doing some work and it disappeared. Sure do miss my friend.

I love pocket knives too. I've always been a Buck fan (like Case too) but carry a made in Japan Kershaw now because it's comfortable, sharpens quick, and holds an edge. I was disappointed with the last few Buck's that I bought. As far as price...what hasn't increased in cost?

I have 2 knives, one junker for cutting straps, or other "stuff", then a nice Case for "dress" wear. The junker is a Zippo, they only made them for a few years, but it is decent steel, and is a lock back with plastic handle.

I usually carry a Gerber Multi-plier. It can do a whole lot more than just cut. I can round off any bolt, ruin the slot on a screw, and pinch the heck out of my hand much more conveniently now. It will almost do a whole lot of things!

I don't build pocket knives but being a knifemaker I know what to look for and I don't mind spending up to $200 to get it. I have a Benchmade CLA Auto 4300. Great steel, G10 handle and if a alligator eats one hand....I can still open it

Benchmade Axis flipper is my everyday pocket knife. Really holds an edge.
