Is it too late in the season to be eating them? I'll be headed out first weekend of turkey season and mainly looking to kill some rabbits. Jacks are doing well at our place so I will get a few of the
. Cottons are plentiful so hoping for a lot of them. This is later in the year than I normally kill the , just wondering if it's too warm and the parasites will be back

IMHO, Don't listen to fairy tales.
They can carry parasites any time of the year
Just aim at normal behaving bunnies.
And check for parasites when skinning, any time of the year.

Yeah, I've heard it doesn't get cold enough long enough for the "only months with an R" thing to matter.

An over abundance of rabbits will give you an over abundance of predators pretty soon. An over abundance of predators will leave you with an under abundance of surviving fawns.

I have heard of the parasites in rabbits for many years but have never seen. How do you identify?

Typically they just have some type of botfly larvae in them. Old timers call them "wolves". A small, fat, leathery black worm about the size of your thumb from the tip to the first knuckle. When the body cools after being shot they usually come out, and I've never seen more than one or two in a rabbit. They are just under the skin, and they are still safe to eat if they have them. Nothing to freak over. I would be more worried about what the organs look like. Always check the liver for spots, if that looks healthy it's probably fine to eat. I have eaten plenty of rabbit that had 1 or 2 wolves under the skin when I cleaned them.

Good to know! I've just always heard the wives tale of months with R. An over abundance of rabbits will give you an over abundance of predators pretty soon. An over abundance of predators will leave you with an under abundance of surviving fawns. That's the first step. Finally on a good lease that produced good results my first year. We are over run wth cottons & jacks and naturally yotes. Nobody hunts any of those so I'm going to do some work this coming weekend

I grew up on the same story, except it was rabbit season is during months ending in "R". But in much of Texas it rarely gets cold enough to kill off all the wolves. You will likely see them in some rabbits year round. Nothing to worry about. Cook it well and you'll be fine.
