I was just wondering how many people on here have considered getting into bowhunting but havent made the jump? And if so why havent you? Or if you did try it out and quit why did you give up on it?

I thought about it for a while because of hearing the stories on here. I had the opportunity to buy used bow and a bunch of accy's cheap so I took the plunge. Haven't killed anything with it yet but it sure is fun to shoot and I plan on hunting turkey and deer with it this season. Honestly never thought I would try it but glad I did.

I got a crossbow to hunt Nac Co bow season a few years ago but found that I am too fat to hunt deer in the TX heat. So I ended up shooting a ram with the bow later that year. Then I got a good deal on a compound bow (Parker brand) and shot another ram with it this year.

ta HF ... Personaly started deer hunting with a Kentucky .45 got down here, & got brush gun first, leases tis all needed 30-30, later got a .270 wanted try an elk hunt... Been bow hunting since started leasing... Last 20 yrs enjoyed my archery hunts on WMA.... Shoulder k-put or would still be doing archery, enjoy archery & my .45 Kentucky hunts.... Personal choice ... Edit: ya can have a shooting range in your yard...

The experience harvesting an animal with a bow is a feeling that is tough to put into words. The wind, scent, cover factors increase pretty substantially, but that makes the success so much more satisfying.

Plus, just throwing a couple targets out and shooting for a couple hours with good friends and cold beers makes the purchase of a bow worth it in itself.

going to get back into, the county where I live, I can take a doe with a bow. one buck for reg gun season

Awesome moose. I started bow hunting a few years ago. After my first kill I don't think I have actually killed anything else with a gun since. Just don't get the same excitement out of it as I do with a bow.

it'll make you a better hunter.
just remember to practice-practice-practice.
then after practicing you can practice.
be sure to pass on any shot that is questionable.
most gun hunters should but often don't.

I would like to but hunt with my kids next to me 95% of the time so it is a gun in a raised blind for us for now.

I dove off into it the year before the state let me hunt by myself. That included going to LSBA & IBO tourneys through all of my teens in the off-season. It's fun and you learn a lot being right on top of deer.

I have a crossbow and I've taken a fallow and hog with it. I'd like to transition to compound bow, but the places I usually hunt don't want you using them as the probability of kill goes down. If I get a lease, I'd probably switch to bow exclusively.

That said, it's been nice to have the flexibility of the crossbow as some places I've hunted in the past were not safe for a rifle as the acreage was too small.

THIS^ Almost anyone can grab a rifle, sit in a box blind and shoot something at a distance. There is nothing like learning how to get close and looking eye to eye with your target, waiting for just the right moment, before you draw and release. It's a blast. It will get in your blood!

My advice for the new shooter is to get a friend to join you (new shooter or old shooter) and start practicing together. Once you get good at known yardages, then take a 3D target and stick it in the woods. It's almost like playing HORSE, but you are using arrows. Walk to a spot in the woods and shoot at the 3D target. All unknown distances and varying terrain and objects. You may have to shoot between a pair of trees or something to hit the target. Person with the best shot picks the next spot to shoot from. It's fun to do in a group. Then you and your friend(s) start going to 3D archery tournaments in the area. It'll be 20 or more 3D targets with unknown yardage. You pay an entry, you keep score, you turn in the scores and see if you place at the end. Those tournaments run from January until the Fall. They are probably the best thing to get you used to shooting the bow, learning to judge distance accurately, and confidence to take a good shot.

dont for get you dont have to buy a the most expensive bow on the market for years and years my dad hunted sucsfly with a bear when they were not that good he has had a few jump the arrow thats how slow it is but he took dear with it every year and watch buying used you never know if they guy his kids or friends dry fired it and it splinters in your face you can get a good bow for about 300

I personally just made the jump over to bow hunting. Just like said before, the extra work and determination has me itching for next season already. I just purchased a diamond infinite edge from Academy for 279$. Shot it for the first time this weekend and have it sighted in sharp at 15 and 25 yards. When I get out to 30 I cant seem to be as consistent. But im sure its because just now learning proper form and what not.
