Found a lease in Archer county for this comeing year. Very excited since its been a few years since ive been in the field. Not real familiar with this area. Any reports from fellow hunters in the area would be great. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Archer County, it has good deer there. Its a high pressure area due to being a 2 hr drive from the metromess, if you mash the gas, lol. This was my first yr there. I hunted Throckmorton county the last 4 yrs. which is one county to the S.W.. The deer #s seem to be low but the deer are there. They do go nocturnal very early due to the pressure I assume. I had great success going up on Thurs. evening and being in blind Friday morning. Some will disagree, but I think the deer pattern us and they never expected me on a Friday morning. If your looking for quality deer, perfect. If you looking for #s, not so perfect. There is also a descent processor in town with good rates. Where abouts in Archer did you land?

Very sound advice in hunting off days in these near in metromess counties. Lots of peeps out there on Sat./Sun., mid-weeks are also very slow out there. I've always heard some nice ones around Archer City with abundant agriculture out that way..

I found a lease in megargel tx it's on the edge of young county and archer county. I was wondering the same thing. If there are a lot of deer there or not? And maybe hogs?

I hunt SW Young county near Murray, not a high deer density county but surprisingly can be some good quality. Important to hunt early season during the rut - my best results historically. Deer go nocturnal pretty early for the most part.

This was my first season in Archer county, also. I'll echo what 300j said, it doesn't appear to be good for numbers but there are some quality bucks out there. I had more hunts where I didn't see any deer than hunts where I saw deer. The second weekend of the season I passed on a 4.5 year old 9-pointer that would have scored about 120, and I never saw another buck the rest of the season. I did, however, have 3 or 4 bucks on camera (mostly at night) on a semi-regular schedule that were at least 125" deer. There are some nice bucks out there, but connecting with one probably isn't going to be easy. They seem to be pretty nocturnal to begin with and that probably only gets worse after gun season starts. There are lots of dove, I hear there are lots of hogs but I haven't personally seen many yet, and depending on your habitat there are turkey. I have a decent turkey population, but my area is on a wet-weather creek with some of the best trees for roosting in the general area.

CJ - That ought to be a very "gamey" lease - anything on the river is usually plenty good. I would imagine that you would have both hogs and turkeys. Good Huntin'

I hunt S.W. of you and agree with the above comments on density and quality. You will most likely have a good many hogs and possibly a LOT of hogs.

You're about 30 +/- miles N of my ranch HQ in NE Young county.
I am quite familiar with the area around Scotland especially along the river.

A lot of open country around there, a lot of folks grow wheat, oats & other various crops deer love.
This is why some think it is a low density area, the deer don't have to go far in some places just a matter of feet to find groceries that they prefer over corn.
If your lease is in between the river and a wheat/oat field, set up overlooking their travel paths.
Just like anywhere hunting the edges, depressions, funnels should pay off for deer & pigs.

Usually good dove hunting, if allowed plant 50 ~ 100lbs of sunflower and they'll be thick.
If you can do food plots plant something different than whats on the surrounding properties.
If you're on the river you'll have pigs, if you have large roost trees you'll have turkey.
Sandhills usually pretty thick, duck so so, geese can be good.

The only negative I can think of depends on how close to the highway you are, from time to time people dump unwanted pets at / around the bridge.

I agree, not a ton of deer, but good deer. Lease had a large creek so tons of hogs and turkey.

I'm sure you scouted the lease. A ton of that land is under water.

every piece of your equipment and a few cracks of your own.
