For years I have been using a Lansky, Arkansas trihone, or some other style sharpener. This past hunting season I was going through knives like crazy and contemplated putting up my customs in favor of a Havalon. I contacted Tim "Chops" Lambkin about the WorkSharp Ken Onion electric knife sharpener. After some talking to Tim about using this on his knives that I have, he said it was a good sharpener as long as I didn't allow heat to build up and was careful with the tip. I got mine in about 3 days ago, and this thing rocks. Sharpened a few of my kitchen knives, still have a lot to go, and sharpened my work knife. That poor knife has cut cans, wires, wood, you name it, and the edge was showing its wear. A few passes through the WS and it's now easily shaving my arms. After sharpening 4 knives I'm missing most of the hair on my hand and wrist. Only 20 more knives to go If you have been thinking about one of the electric sharpeners, I say go for it. Very fast and scary sharp

Got one for Christmas in 2014. About time I take it out of the box I guess.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Saw them at a hunting show, looked interesting but I'm old school I guess when it comes to knife sharpening. I could be missing out though. Been plenty of times cleaning numbers of pigs with little or no help and wished I had a faster way to sharpen knives. Might give one a try someday.

I've never used a knife sharpener. My setup is a piece of picture frame glass and automotive sandpaper. Save your arm, if you can slice paper, it's sharp.
back when we used to eat housecats we marinated them in louisiana hot sauce and soy sauce then season them with lemon pepper........then onto the grill slow cooking them 3 hours........excellent folded in tortillas and pico de gallo----Newgulf

I like the work sharp but it takes a little practice with a knife you don't care about first. It is just a mini belt sander. That thing will take off some metal in a hurry and you can't drag the tip all through or let it drop once past the guard. Once you get the hang of it, it is great. It will also sharpen scissors and other stuff as well.

It will also sharpen scissors and other stuff as well. The KO edition has an adjustable speed control, really helps with being precise and not taking a lot of metal away. Reading reviews on both WorkSharps, it sounds like they made a huge improvement over the original

Not to push it on anybody, but I have another one new in the box that I'll sel for $130. I hit the "one click order" twice on Amazon and don't really feel like sending it back. If somebody wants it holler at me, if not it's going to UPS on Saturday

I don't trust myself sharpening my nice blades yet, so I'm a Havalon guy when it comes to skinning & cleaning game.
Knife sharpening is a skill I'd like to add to my toolbox though, so ill probably look into this.

I have a regular Work Sharp. The Ken Onion model is the best. It has a wider belt and a roller guide to keep the profile of the blade level when pulling the blade over the belt. This is where you want to be careful with the regular Work Sharp like I have. No big deal, just follow these directions and it works great. I sharpen all my customs with it and I never scratch the blade or dull the tip:
The key to not messing up your tip or blade with the belt is keep the PROFILE of the knife LEVEL when you pull it through the guide, and of course keeping contact with the guide from the beginning to the end of the contact with the belt. Many try to dive the blade down vertically when they get to the part of the blade that curves up to the tip. This is what can end up grinding the tip off your blade or scratching it.

I use the worksharp to get it shaving sharp (mostly use the super fine grit polish belt) then finish with the smith's ceramic sticks to get the hair-splitting sharp edge.

Northern Tool had the regular one for $69 or 79 bucks. I thought I had seen a flyer from BPS also.

Just a comment, I've found that to get that last little bit, to make it shaving sharp, it takes a leather strop and rouge. It doesn't take much, 4 to 5 passes, but they are never sharp enough unless I use a strop.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Again, not even in the same ballpark. That's a $1200 sharpener with an industrial continua duty motor. They are very nice but you can compare a Volkwagen to a Ferrari

I know the feeling about hairless arms. When I get in the mood to sharpen my knives, I generally do it all at once then rotate through them until they all need sharpening. At that point, my left arm is hairless.
I sharpen my knives with either a double sided Norton whet stone or a set of DMT diasharp diamond stones. Before I knew about strops, I put the finishing touches on my blades with a burned out ceramic bulb from a big damn dragline light. It worked great to sharpen the knife, but using it as a steel thats only a few inches long was hell on cutting my fingers. I can get a super sharp razor edge from just the stone, but its a lot quicker to use a strop.
