Something that seems to be trending within the deer hunting community, and especially on the hunting shows, is giving names to certain bucks.

Just another example of silliness being introduced into the sport. It reminds me of girls giving names to their dolls.

I may make a mental name or picture but only publicly use names for people and pets.

We give names sometimes so we know which deer we are talking about easier without having to pull up a picture. Calling hunting a sport is just as silly to me as naming dolls.

Personally, I use the same name for every buck I see that satisfies the title of being a "shooter".

Yup. It gets old saying 'you know the one with the weak 3s' or the really wide one, or that typical 10 with the 4" double drops and split G2s.

We have a lot of deer like that last one. It gets confusing.

I give my bucks names because they each have a folder on my computer for trail pics. Hard to label the folder "2.5 yr old 8pt" and then change it the next year. Yearling bucks that have no distinguishing features go into miscellaneous.

I have done this with all the deer we have shot. its neat to look back and have several years of pictures.

We do it with bucks and does just so my kids can start learning how to identify specific deer. It's great family time, especially when they name the deer and they love it.

I name nearly all our good bucks. Only way to talk specifically about that buck vs. "the mature 8 pointer."

When you have ~30 different bucks over 3.5yo to discuss you've got to distinguish them somehow.

Crip (leg was crippled), Pila buck (first saw him by a water pila), Big Boy (for obvious reasons), Hoss (also for obvious reasons), Airplane (ditto), etc.

I don't see a thing wrong with it

In fact I would like to see some of the names others have given - may give me some ideas on future names

We use characteristics to name them to keep the conversation simple. Instead of saying I saw, "that tall racked 8 that I showed you a picture of last week, we had pictures of him last year, the one we are thinking is 4...." I say I saw "Big 8". Just easier for us to know what's what's. I don't think it's silly and honestly see it more with management minded guys. Guys going and killing the first 8 point they see, don't need to worry about names.

I'll use names like Big 8, High Horned Buck, or Wide 10, but usually refrain from names like King George III, or John Williams for deer.

Just to name a few. We don't name them all. Mostly just the bigger deer with unique characteristics.

We had/have:

Long Beams
High Brows
Touchy (his mains were within a half inch of touching tips)
Fivel (started life as a 5 point cull we couldn't ever kill)
MIA (deer goes missing in action every year)
Low Hat (deer has a wide spread but only three inch tines)
Starburst (as ghey as it may sound, he had several small kickers coming off of his 2s and 3s)
Beckham (bent mainbeam and a few kickers)

...and the best for last...

Romo - we thought he was going to be an impressive deer this year, but was a real disappointment.

Mr Crabs - 11 pt with crab claw and spongebob reference. Killed by my son opening weekend.
Ol One Eye - Mature 8 with a dead eye that is very easy to spot at night
Diamond - Young 10 that angles up and out then back in
Pumpkin - Young 10 The symmetrical tines are curved inward and resemble said fruit
Rocky - Mature 10 that broke off his right side fighting
Fatboy - Old 8 for obvious reasons
Whitey - Young 8 with whiter antlers than the rest of the herd
Bucky - Button buck with a scar on his left hip. It'll be fun to track him over the years.
Lucky - Wide 7 (lucky 7) - not so lucky anymore. Was culled 12/30.
Skywalker - Mature 8 tall and narrow
Heavy D - Mature 7 with heavy horns and resides currently on the cull list

Those are the bucks that visited my feeder this year and received names. There were also a couple of fork horns and a couple I couldn't quite make out.

Don't really have any named this year, there's big10, droptine and one that's starting to get called bumper from getting hit by a truck and surviving it (Thank God, if it doesn't affect his horns he'll be a monster).

Not sure what you call "trending", but I have only been hunting for around thirty years and have seen and heard it all of them.

So because you don't agree with it, must be silly...says a lot about the source

We name the bucks for most the reasons already mentioned, to keep up with them year to year and identify them easier when discussing them.

its been said, by everyone else, we name ours so we can keep up with them year after year (after year after year after year) and so we can identify them and talk about them.

most get a name that identifies them physically, fatty, the 15, ol massey, the NT (non-typical), bruiser, whose neck was scarred real bad from fighting... and some get named for when/where we usually see them, august, pipeline 8, and so on...

We brought in three breeder does last year.
They are named:
Nada
Squat
Diddly
It makes for fun conversation saying "I didn't see Squat" or "I saw Nada".
Recently I saw "Diddly-Squat"
