You better hope that ruber timing belt in the Tacoma has been changed to a chain, if not it is a ticking time bomb waiting to destroy the motor. I've had both vehicles, and each one had their quirks, and each one had their strong points.
Of the 2 you are looking at I would go with the Tacoma, as I mentioned above, simply becasue of the fuel injection. The 80's model Jeeps are not the best, a 1991 and up Wrangler is what I would be shopping forif you wanted a Jeep. They have strong leaf springs and stronger frames, galvanized frames so rusting isnt an issue, fuel injection, and a more powerful 6cyl. I do not believe toyota makes an interference engine, honda does, but not toyota. Meaning if the belt broke than it does no damage, just have to put a new one one.

I don't get the unreliable thing. I've got 225k miles on a jeep wrangler and still runs strong on the original motor and drivetrain Sure some of them go a long time, but MOST don't. History proves the toyota is much more reliable than a jeep. Most toyotas will go a few hundred thousand miles, most jeeps will not even come close to that. Just because one person has a yugo with a million miles does not make a yugo a reliable car. Maybe toyota is more reliable but jeeps are not unreliable. They are actually pretty stout. Maybe not the most comfortable but pretty reliable. Me and some friends took two Jeeps, a TJ and LJ, from College Station to Moab, wheeled for a week straight and drove back. I wasn't worried a bit we would break down for any reason other than doing something stupid offroad. We stayed pretty mild for us though and didn't have a single problem

Go with the Taco. More reliable and fuel injection as someone else said. Resale value will be good as well.

I STRONGLY disagree with most of you. Some Jeep may be underpowered but mechanical reliability is not typically an issue. If you really think a Tacoma has the same or better resale than a Jeep I'm not going to change your mind but your wrong. KBB has the Jeep Wrangler as having the second highest resale value, second only to....toyota tacoma.

I just looked on Craigslist and most of the people's opinions on here are incorrect. The price for a 1995 jeep that actually runs was $3500-19995. There were zero that's right zero 4wd toyotas for sale that ran. So, what does that tell you? I know exactly what it tells me.....

Tacoma did not come out until 95. If it is the old Toyota truck and has the 22r motor those things are hard to kill. If it is in good shape and in good working order that is a good price. If it is a 6 cylinder then even better.

Taco, hands down. Jeeps, in my opinion are overrated and in most cases over priced. The Taco's hold their value like crazy. For example We sold the wife's 2006 4wd V6 taco that had 134k miles for 16k last year. I could be biased though being I have never been a fan of the Jeep.

I like Jeeps as you can tell from my posts but I absolutely wouldn't pay $6k for a 1980. You can get a TJ (97-06) for that price.

Not sure how I worked statistics when it's a fact, but you sure do get worked up over this. Funny thing though, i own both. Im not bias so stop getting your panties in a bind.

I can tell you what it tells me since I own both vehicles. 08 Jeep JK and 95 Tacoma 4x4. I would sell my Jeep before my Tacoma. The Tacomas are harder to come by in a 4x4 V6 configuration because those that have them, KEEP them!!! They last for ever. I love my Jeep, but the Tacoma is the ol reliable!

My in-laws have proved the durability of the Tacomas over the last 20 years. Great riding truck on their West Texas ranch too
