I see a potential problem. The hogs, it looks like they could move the trough around and wind up breaking the pvc water line. If that happens you will loose all of the water. A possible solution would be to use a rubber hose instead of rigid pvc.
Also, on the algae problem, you could just drop a chlorine tablet in the tank every now and again.

Minners....for mosquito lara.
We put 'em in our troughs.
Algae....just clean it once in a while.

I'm currently building a Stainless Steel trough that will be anchored to the ground. It will also have a stainless pipe to protect the PVC. Also it will probly get half in-circulated with a cattle panel.
Rubber hose is a no-go as we have trophy squirrels that will decimate andy type of hose.

What kind of hose can you use that the mice wont chew up? They chew up standard garden hoses. Quote:

Try a stainless steel braided washing machine hose or PVC.

Thanks, I was going with PVC but Im afraid the deer will crush it with their hooves if i dont bury it. Ill look into the washing machine hose. seems like a real good idea. Quote:

If you are worried about Algae, there are some "safe" chemicals you can get to put in the water. I bought some at Home Depot in the pond department a while back.

I did something very much like that. I plumbed 6 of those tanks together, which gives me 1500 gallons. I also used the white plastic barrel as you did for the watering trough except mine is set vertical with a section cut out of the side for the opening and left the top and most of the barrel side attached to slow evaporation. I have two problems. It stays full of drowned honey bees and it really grows algea.
a few gold fish could slow the algae way down.
coons would love those gold fish
