I just moved to San Antonio and I'm eligible to hunt on Camp Bullis. I am curios if anyone has any experience hunting out there. It seems like a great deal.

I had a friend hunt out there while I was stationed there and I know that he did not have to use his tags.

I've never hunted there, but I grew up close by and used to run through the camp all the time. I can tell you that there are plenty of big deer in the area. Sounds like an awesome opportunity.

Active duty, retired military and government workers are allowed to hunt Camp Bullis. The base has quite a few big bucks but there is allot of restrictions. They have drawings prior to the opening of gun season for stands for the first 2 weekends and then daily drawings prior to each hunt. They also have drawings for which stands are allowed to harvest a buck. I hunted there 2 years ago the entire season and was never lucky enough to be on a buck stand. You can only hunt their stands and have to come out of the woods at 1000 and go through another drawing for the afternoon hunt. Their harvest quotas are pretty low and the season is usually closed around the first week of December. The best bet is to Archery hunt as to there is less restrictions.

must be active military to hunt or put in 80 hours of free labor helping with the outdoor group.
seriously? I'm all over that if it's true.

I live not far from Bullis. A few years ago they had a buck with a freaky large rack taken out there.... with a pocket knife. Kind of a fiasco. Google "camp bullis buck" and it will come up from several sources. Just looked at realtree's site and they still have pics. Small bodied deer with 36 points. It was long CYA kinda story, but if I remember right it involved a helicopter, a disoriented, apparently ailing buck, a fence, several guys in a jeep, a folding knife, posted pics on the internet, and a rack/cape that disappeared before the warden showed up.

Right you are, here's the link http://www.realtree.com/community/feature.php?ID=218
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Doug is correct with the story. I know that it was a medium size buck but had crazy antlers. He was found to be hunting illegally and it was taken from him. Don't know any further details. Their are some bucks with decent racks out there. Good luck and happy hunting!

Please re-read the factual accounts in the link before making a statement like this!
I also know the details as I was there!

I finally went out to Bullis today to see what it is all about. There is an awful lot of rules, not sure if that is a bad thing, but they don't make it easy to just show up and hunt. Bowhunting seems like the best option for me, you can put up your own stand and feeder and don't have to worry about it. On my way to the office I saw 1 big Tom turkey and 9 hens. Looks like turkey hunting there could be good as well. The prices are very reasonable considering the cost of an annual lease in south Texas. I checked on the Mcmullen County bombing range. The Navy has the Espindido Ranch in that area which is a 6800 managed ranch. I have to do some more research on it, but you can google "Espindido Ranch" and get some pretty good info. Oh yeah, they have the Bullis Buck on the wall in the office. That deer is huge.
