Just a quick question...
I went ahead and adjusted my own x mark trigger a second ago, and I was wondering if taking off the stock and putting it back on with a different torque on the screw will change my POI?? Basically do I need to re-sight in my gun after taking the stock off? I am headed on a hunt in the AM so wanna make sure...

It can have an effect on the POI, but not to severe! Always tighten the rear screw first though, and I would check the POI as soon as you get a chance!

I don't have a torque wrench...do you think hand tight is good enough, or too much or...???

Anytime you take it out of the stock your zero is off.
Hand tight cannot manipulate the same torque values every time. You can get a decent (I use it) adjustable in/lbs torque wrench from Sears for about $80.
Depending upon your Remington model and stock bedding, it will like between 40 and 65 in/lbs. Let me know your rifle model and when you get the wrench and I can help you with your torque values.

It is a Remington 700 SPS Varmint.
After I check the zero tomorrow, and get it back on if it is off, I won't be messing with it again.

Synthetic stock? should be around 45 in/lbs.
I can meet you and let you play with adjusted torque values with a wrench if you want. Torque values can make your 3/4 MOA rifle stretch to 2MOA and back pretty easy. A lot of it is the crappy pot metal in the bottom metal of the rifle.
Your same rifle dropped in an AICS or similar chassis would take 65 in/lbs

Yeah it is a synthetic stock. So you are saying that different torques can not only change POI but can also change how good your rifle groups?? Man, my head hurts now. Should have never effed with the trigger the night before going on a weekend hunt.

Yes Sir, it can. I have fixed many 700P rifles by taking them from 65 in/lbs down to 45 in/lbs. They went from 1 MOA to .5 MOA.
It came from the factory as 45 in/lbs... just put it back the same and it will shoot as good.
It is a machine and everything is fixable, I promise. If you don't want to spend the dough on a wrench, call your local smith (who should have a in/lbs torque wrench) and tell him you will give him $5 to but you at 45 in/lbs. It is a 30 second job.

Thanks for your help. I think what I will do is, on the 7 hour drive to Sanderson tomorrow, stop somewhere and buy a torque wrench, change it back to 45 and return the torque wrench!! lol Then re-check zero when I get there.

sounds good..... just remember what I tell all my customers/students: "No good ideas come the week before a match or a hunt." Bugs are best worked out when there is no deadline

I have taken stocks off of several of my guns in the past to clean thoroughly. Apparently, I was very lucky and it had no affect on the POI. Definitely a good thing to know that it does not happen that way very often.
Keep your fingers crossed that it is still consistent.

I think a lot of the changes are subjective.... if you are happy with an inch or incha nd half at 100, probably not a lot of change.
If you are interested in groups at or below 1moa and ranges beyond 100, it can make a difference. The key is to be consistent with the tension. Another thing to consider is if the rifle changes as it's shot. Some do. Especially if they are too tight to begin with.
Good stocks tend to have less variance than cheap stocks, imagine that.

I stopped by a mechanic shop on the way to the ranch and set the screws to 45 and it shot fine!
