Posted the picture of the quail in the Upland section, but thought I'd share here too. Saturday morning quail blast followed by a Sunday morning teal shoot made for an excellent weekend.

Nice pics. Our quail population has finally recovered, but we will wait a year before we really start hunting them again.

Is hunting really a determining factor with them?
I have always been told to shoot them when you have them. We typically always have a pretty good # of quail. In the past 8 years quail on our property has been directly linked with rainfall. We have never shot more than a dozen in a year.

It's probably the least important factor for them, as I'd put rainfall, food and predation all above hunting pressure. Rainfall is the only one of those we can't control. We can have burns to promote quality native grasses, kill every predator that moves (except those darn hawks), and limit the amount of hunting pressure. I just figure that if you have 4 hunters per weekend shooting limits of birds each day over the course of 18 weekends in a season, its easier on your population to take out 360 (5 bird limit) birds than 1080 (15 bird limit).
**Disclaimer: Although we would love to hunt every weekend, that doesn't happen.

I haven't seen a quail since I was a kid.
