I hunt Northwest Tx and the Big guys are making there rounds with their nose on the ground and traveling great distances. I'm headed to Freer(Lasalle, Duval, McMullen county area) and was wondering if they are behind us with their patterns. Whats happening down there right now? Any tricks? No blinds or feeders where I'm going and the ranch has seen little to no pressure so I'm wondering if corning the roads is just going to be best. Whatcha think???

Green and not much deer activity.
Your about a month early
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Thanksgiving is the earliest you will start to see any kind of activity like that. To much green right now that is new growth that is allowing the deer to get all they want without coming to corn. They will still eat some but just not like they were a month ago when it was very dry. How large is the ranch you are hunting? Very many roads or right-of-ways?

Yes corn the roads! It's a little early for the rut in south Texas but I would not count rattling out of a bag of tricks at anytime in the southern part of the state. find trails and play the wind my friend

Ranch is about 2600 acres is all. Google earth shows lots of old senderos.

Take you plenty of mosquito spray and your snake boots. It was 77 degrees this morning and muggy. I am about 90 miles NE of Freer. I have had 6"+ of rain the last 2 weeks and my deer are hardly touching corn right now. I have seen 8 bucks, 2 does and 1 fawn total in the past 4 hunts over a 2 day period. I normally see that many in one set. I have corn left under all my feeders after the morning feeding time. I only had 3 deer hit the feeder in the past 2 days. You can corn the roads but I think you will be better off finding a location they are feeding in and corning that than the roads since you said the place has not been hunted and no feeders at all.

You were right about the mosquitos!!!! Never saw a snake but I did watch a couple of young bucks harassing does and I witnessed a fight between a couple of big 8 pts. Deer were plentiful on Friday but the good ones were 7-800 yards away in the sendaros on the fresh grass and would move into the brush and stay there as you tried to close the distance.

Down in Starr county this past weekend, I saw a lot of doe and fawns, but no bucks. The week before that in Duval county same thing. The only buck that came out was shot by my brother-in-law. He was a loner.
If you want some friendly advice, get a haircut and take a bath. You wouldn't get hassled so much.
