Looking for an affordable scope for a long range rifle setup, keep in mind long range for me is anything over 200 yards so i dont need anything super fancy just something to get me into being comfortable with longer range shots

What caliber are you shooting? Primary Arms has a 4-14x44 FFP Mildot that works pretty good, but I wouldn't put it on anything bigger than a 308. I put one on my RRA AR15 in 223,and it has been a very good scope, but it doesn't compare to my $1k + scopes.

any 3-12 would be good. You can dial the longer shots with any scope

Yes, double emphasis on that. Otherwise people will go all over the map with suggestions and many may not be useful. As guy just barely starting his own "long distance shooting" adventure, I was turned onto the swfa ss 3-15x42. It's $700, which is more than if ever spent before on a scope but far less than what other longer shooters do. I can do decent up to 400yds and do not think my scope quality is holding me back.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

If your on a budget I would suggest a Nikon prostaff 4-12x40 or the Burris droptine which I believe is a 4.5-14x40. Don't know much about the Burris as I haven't looked through one in the field but I know they make good scopes. And the Nikon is a great budget scope.

http://swfa.com/Vortex-65-20x50-Viper-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P13287.aspxClose as I could get to $400. Skip the Crossfire II, in optics spending more typically means higher glass quality. It certainly does comparing these two models. Zero it at 100 yards, cap the turrets. Your holdover for 200 yards is .5 Mil, that's halfway from the center of the reticle to the first dot below. Your hold over for 300 yards is 1.0 Mil, that's the first dot below the center of the reticle.

Why wouldn't they make it accurate in the 20x instead of the 14x?

Correct. A Mil is only a Mil at one power. Some scope companies do that. And some times the magnification ring is labeled with the power then Mil then power. So 6X, 8X, 10X, 12X, Mil, 14X, ect.

Why wouldn't they make it accurate in the 20x instead of the 14x? That's a decision that may look stupid, but isn't. Mirage is much less likely to be an issue at 14x.

Not for killing deer in the beginning or last legal light. For a budget long range, target only scope, yes. But not a dual purpose.

Sighting in any scope will be the same zero no matter the magnification. I sight in at max power. Aim small, hit small.
14X is where you have to be for your reticle to be correct, so that a Mil is a Mil. On this scope, at 7X magnification 1.0 Mil will actually represent 2.0 Mil. On a first focal plane scope a Mil is always a Mil. As sight picture increses so does the reticle. But going FFP will get you well past your stated budget.
