I grew up in, and still live in East Texas. We still had a few birds here when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's. My dad and uncle talked about the good old days, and my uncle always had a dog I could borrow. I got my first pup in about 1990. Had just enough birds left to get her started. Had access to 500 acres in Henrietta with lots of birds and she made a bird dog in one weekend. Ended up building a kennel at my parents place and ultimately had 4 pointers and a setter. I can honestly say that over the next 5 or 6 years I had some of the best times of my life bird hunting with my dad and best friend. The road trips, hotels, eating at restaurants, and of course the hunting. During the past 15 or so years, my career and family have dominated my life. Couple that with the scarce quail population, and I had all but completely removed myself from the sport. This spring, in preparation for building a house, my wife and I sold our house (more quickly than we expected). My dad passed away about 3,years ago so my mother asked us (me, wife, and 3 kids) to move back in with her until our house is completed. After hearing such good things about quail numbers this year I made myself a promise that I would reclaim my passion. I have a 14 year old son who has never seen a quail, with whom I want desperately to share my passion. I bit the bullet, sold some guns, and bought a trained dog. Gonna look at another one next week. I spent all day today cleaning 15 years of neglect and grime out of my kennels. I put my new dog in them. First dog that's been in them since about 1997. I ordered my son some briar britches and a game vest. I bought a case of #8 20 ga. Shells I borrowed a 2 hole dog box. I've got motel reservations in the Oklahoma panhandle for opening weekend. I'm leaving work Friday at noon and picking my son up from school, and we are gonna take a road trip bird hunt!!!!! EXCITED BEYOND MEASURE!!!!!!

Man that is awesome. I have some of the greatest memories from hanging on to my dad's shirttail all winter long chasing quail and I bet your son will too. Congratulations!

That is what it is all about. Hope you have many great hunts.

Tell your son that this is the way you are supposed to treat a lemon headed pointer.

Where are you staying in the Panhandle? I assume Guymon or Hooker? Hunting public or private? Give me some input after the trip and let me know how it turned out. I'll be up there later in the year. My first trip is to Kansas for opening weekend up there.

Good luck getting back into the game. Love the Filson gear. Best in the business.
Yeah, don't listen to me. I'm just an idiot.
Lol. Duckbill that was funny! The dude up top has already taken lots of bone before this deer, both mule and whitetail.

Wow... It's kind of dusty in this thread.
Good for you on making the jump and thanks for the wonderful post.
I'm wanting to in a bad way...it's been 15+ years since I had a bird dog and what I seeing this year is pumping me up again.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

Love the old pics. And nice kennel. Good luck this season.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.
