Flooded wheat and cotton. Average depth is 2ft of water over 2ft of mud. No cover anywhere taller than knee high. Stack pallets then brush in lay out blinds was one of our thoughts. These are crappy phone pics but it was loaded with pins, widgeon, and teal is morning. Had specks a few weeks ago and will be a sandhill roost when they show up, so I need to figure out how to hide better. We killed birds on it last year in a little temporary blind we built, but most wouldn't commit.

A pit blind sure would be nice but prolly not realistic. You have to stick to a low profile set up. Layouts on top of pallets brushed in nicely is the only thing I can think of. Do the birds want to be in a certain area? That looks like a lot of area for the ducks to land.

Layout boat.

Most of them are landing in open water then swimming into the rows of wheat right now. They are liking a corner on the northeast end, but that's how last year started then later into the season the ice drove them to the deeper open water. The rows of cotton block the wind and this spot will ice solid and take a week of warm weather to thaw. Cranes always stay on the north end.

Layouts for sure. That's all we hunted out of when we were hunting stuff like that up in the Lubbock area.

The layout blinds on pallets sounds like a good way to go swimming to me. If it's stable that would be a good way to go tho.

If it's 2' deep, seems like you should be able sit on a stool/chair and have your butt at water level. Stick some brush in around you up to head height, hunker down, and be still. How may folks are going to be hunting?

Sounds like you better get busy on that northeast side.

Take the time to brush in as well possible. Looks like you are headed for a good opener.

You could also make the mud flat special like Okie Rob does. Make a round one man chicken wire blind that is just big enough to go around you while sitting in your chair and just tall enough to cover you up. Zip tie brush on the outside of it, push it into the mud, done.

Drake Stake out Blinds.

Flooded Ag field probably to shallow to drag boats around. If you can leave the pallets at a couple of strategic locations, you can move the layout from one set to another depending on what the birds are doing.

Considering the water depth, I'd go with the pallets too and REALLY brush those layouts. On that kind of ground, everything is going to stick out like a sore thumb. I'd try to make my setup like a mini island, probably put a few full bodies or silos around the blind to help break it up, either wear a face mask or paint, not a face mask hanging around your neck so you can spit your copenhagen out

If there is any breeze at all (hopefully a good one) I'd setup cross wind to try to take the focus off the blinds and on the decoys. It would be well worth the trouble to setup your blind so a corn row would normally go right over it, and dig up some stalks and "complete the row" on your blind or pallets.

Me saying average depth was 2ft is misleading. I meant that's the average depth out in the open water where most are landing. In the pics you can see it's only about 6" in the flooded rows, but under that is knee deep mud.

You need an airboat for dropping supplies and hunters.

id just grab a bit of brush and stick in the mud to make a small hut around me then neal in the water.. much cheaper and faster

Kinda what we did last year and it worked ok, but a lot of the big ducks like pins/mallard would flare and the cranes I swear have telescopic vision. I felt like we stood out being the only vertical vegetation over knee high for miles. I don't like the idea of being in a flooded lay out on a cold day but we basically didn't hunt this spot much last year because we never could hide good enough. This spot holds more birds than my other places but I hunt them more since they have much more cover. This little spot would be awesome if we can hide.

Don't count on the sled. This was a couple of years ago when my boy was 13 years old - 6'2" and 155#. It wouldn't float him.


It would work well in a few inches of water/mud and I plan on using mine that way if I get chance, but a couple of feet of water wouldn't work.
