I grew up in a family that came to Central Texas in the late 1800's. My ancestors established a farming community when they came over from Germany. My wife's family also came here in the late 1800's. So my children and grandchildren are results of two families who have been in this county for over 125 years plus.
These many generations have lived off the land - they farmed - they hunted - they protected themselves with guns. My wife's great grandmother watched as a teenager hangings of outlaws on Sundays after church because society back then let you know that if you robbed or murdered someone the consequences were serious. I have pictures of the gallows where she watched as a teenager as criminals paid for their crimes.
My wife and I spent the weekend with our 9 year old grandson - every time we were getting into the car I reminded my grandson to open the door for the lady with us. By the end of the weekend I did not have to remind him - he ran to the car so he could open the door for this beautiful lady.
I am totally old school and not ashamed to admit it - we have to teach our children and their children to do the right thing - even if they are the only ones doing it.
Excuse my rant and long post but in today's world I just felt the need to be "unpolitacally correct" - thanks for hearing me out

Kudo's to you sir for instilling manners in your grandson. Too few parents focus on this the way it should be.

You know, I agree with you 100%, but it is just not happening in this society today. Kids, some kids, have such a skewed view of what is acceptable. The boundaries have been long ago forgotten. There are a few young people that have manners but they are getting fewer with each generation. My son was raised with these type of values, but I have other relatives that never learned. My wife's sister married the wrong guy, a guy with low morals and no manners and it has infiltrated our family. It's sad to see, he has been gone for almost 10 years, but the damage he caused is irreparable. I have been ostracized for having principals, but I stick to my guns, it's all I know. I'm fearful of the society we are leaving for our grandkids but I'm sure my grandparents felt the same way.

Good for you sir. I teach my son and stepson the old ways and I also teach by example. When people stopped doing these things is when things started going to hell in a hand basket.

People that think the way you/ we do are still out there. Most of the guys on this forum, in fact. I agree, but most of the guys in our society are not. I see them everyday where they'd just as soon stick a knife in your throat as say "Excuse me." Being a gentlemen goes way beyond treating the ladies nicely. for old school guys.

I agree 100%.
Our society is melting down because of poor parenting. Children want and need discipline, structure and accountability.
We can see this right before our eyes watching all these 20 something years old men shooting up schools and colleges.

Your story is very similar to when and where my family came from and to. Im probably closer to your grandsons generation than yours, but I still open doors for anybody and will open the car door for my wife as well. Dad always did it because he said grandpa did and told him that any good man would.

We can see this right before our eyes watching all these 20 something years old men shooting up schools and colleges. I thought the couch potato boys that won't grow up and just play video games are a problem. 'Read yesterday that there's a flood of 20-something men asking for Viagra 'cause they've watched so much porn, they can't...ah...perform in a normal, sexual situation.

My oldest daughter is less than two years old and says thank you for everything at least half the time on her own now. same with us raising our kids and now my kids are teaching my grandkids to do the same. Years ago when my son was in kindergarten he had a teacher who would not let him say Yes Mam and No Mam. She and I had a talk and put a stop to that little rule - my son is now a peace officer and 36 years old and he still addresses everyone with Yes and No Sir or Mam

My son said Yessir tonight. I had to look around and wonder who he was talking to. Guess I did something right. I dropped him and sister off at the pond the other day and he brought me back 5 frogs.
