I have never owned a handgun (well I had a
.38 snub nose for a couple days but dumped
it due to inaccuracy).

I am thinking of getting one and would like
your advise.

What's the best bang for the buck. I am partial
to 9mm, but not married to the idea. The Glock
looks nice. But I have no experience and would
like a reliable gun.

I will be buying used as I can't afford a new
one.

Glock, SIG, XD, seem to be the top 3. But I would advise you go hold each one in the caliber of choice as they all 3 feel different in your hand.

My personal preference is my Springer 1911 but also have Kel-Tec 380. I had an XD in 40 and loved it, but sold it in need of funds for another purchase.

Thanks for info........ no idea what an XD
is. I have heard a 1911 is pretty inaccurate?

No problems with the 1911, very popular gun. I would imagine as with any pistol, it takes a little time to become proficient with it.

Nothing wrong with a 9mm, kind of thought about getting one in the future.

I would definitely go with a 9mm and I would choose a Glock 19. The Glock is the easiest handgun to master. I would not go with a 1911. Although the 1911 is a tried and true pistol (and I love them) there is to much of a learning curve for a first pistol. IMHO The XD would not be a bad choice either.

Well in short order and internet cruising I
have narrowed it down to either the XD or the
Glock in the 9mm.

Just have to do some more digging on the Glock
model differences.

Another consideration will be used availability
and price of course. Just can't swing a new one
at this stage.

Thanks for the info

Here’s the cool part about GLOCK… if you buy a 9mm lets say G19 (compact or mid-size) you can simply turn it into a G23 or 32 buy changing barrels out about a $100 bucks. You will need a different mag. also but the .40S&W and .357SIG use the same mag. Not bad, now you have three guns in one!

Armies all over the world like the Glock. Simplicity, reliability, quality. See what fits your hand. The Glock 19 is a very good choice.

God is so good to me.

I would vote for the glock. Very dependable, good resale, lots of add ons if you choose. It would be a good choice.

What is your reason for buying?

You can do the same with XD, if you buy a 40 cal you can go down in caliber, the only exception is you cant go up from a 9mm, at least I dont think you can.

If you are located in N TX, I would strongly encourage you to go Bullit Trap in Plano. You can rent handguns there and see what feels/fits best.

If that's not an option, hopefully you have some bud's who will let you borrow one to try out.

I am a Glock fanatic from the get go, but I'm always leery of recommending one particular firearm, especially to someone with no or limited experience, and I don't mean that to be dis-respectful.

What's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander.

Good luck and when you do find one.............Practice, practice and more practice.

You cant convert a G19 to 40 S&W. You can however convert a 40 to 9mm or 357sig in Glock pistols.

So the best option is the 40 S&W and then
I can get the 9mm barrel as well...

The XD seems the better gun from the limited
digging I've done. With the Glock a close 2nd.

The XD 40 can also be converted to 357sig or 9mm with just a barrel change. No you cannot convert the 9mm up to the other 2 calibers because the bolt face is narrower than the 40 case. In speaking with several gunsmiths about this all have stated plainly that only use a specific brand barrel for this conversion or you can have some ejection issues. I have 3 XDs. 1 XD40 subcompact, 1 XD40 service and 1 XD 9mm tactical. Each 1 has a specific purpose for me. I have owned a Glock 21 and it was extremely accurate and dependable. I simply was not comfortable with the single safety offered on the Glock for the use I had for the gun. Hopefully not getting too far off topic but pertaining to the conversion. With the organization I am with we can provide our own sidearm but it must use a nato rnd. I considered converting my XD 40 service to 9mm for when I am deployed, however if you are trusting your life to a sidearm, do you really want to trust a conversion? just something to think about before you buy a certain caliber with the consideration of converting it. If its just a recreational handgun, more power to you. Regardless whether you go with a Glock or an XD, they are both excellent sidearms.
