I haven't deer hunted since 2003 (got on a quail lease in 04 and have done that since), my dad is getting older and was going to get off of his deer lease unless I agreed to come with him at least a couple times this season, so I agreed. I have decided that I am going to use my old "go to" rifle, a Remington Model 7 in 223. When I was a teenager, I was the talk of the camp at our old South Texas lease near Mathis, I killed a bunch of deer with that rifle (several javelenas and 3 bobcats too). I went to Academy yesterday and couldn't decide what bullets to buy so bought a box of these. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2900402...ain-power-pointAnyone used these? Any others I should look at? I will probably just be shooting a couple of does with it, might run into a hog though, so would these be good for a head shot on a hog? It seems like back then I was shooting a 55 grain but I cant remember what they were. I am looking forward to shooting the ol girl again. Anyway, I will listen to anything you have to say.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

If you reload, I'd go with the 65gr SGKs, but I'm fairly certain a deer won't know the difference. The Winchesters will work just fine.

You can't go wrong with the ammo you bought. With the popularity now of the AR's the ammo is much better than just a few years ago. You know what the caliber is capable of from your own experience so go hunt with it and enjoy!

I would recommend a Nosler partition over anything posted so far. If you haven't used them try them. In light for the task at hand calibers the really shine! Pass throughs and blood trails are the rule not the exception with them, a far superior deer/hog hunting 223 bullet than the SGK or power point.

I don't hunt deer with a 223, but I do pig hunt with it. The Nosler Partition is, in my view, the best choice, with the 65 gr Sierra GK being the second choice. That said, the new Nosler 64 gr Bonded Solid Base just might be as good as the other two I mentioned, but I haven't 'critter tested' it yet. As far as accuracy goes, that 65 gr GK shoots great. I can never seem to get great accuracy with the Partition. And with the 64 gr BSB, it shot just Ok till I got to max load with H335, and it shot great then. What I presently have loaded for pig is the 65 gr GK, but that's because that bullet, the 40 gr Nosler BT, and the 55 gr Nosler BT all shoot to the same POI in this new barrel, which is unexpected, but is great for me.

They'll all work well. Keep your shots behind the shoulder and under 200yds, and you'll have a dead dear.

Big +1! This is what my son will be shooting out of his Tikka T3 this season. I have 300 bullets ready for load work up and getting dialed in. We shot the 60 grain V-max several years ago, and the bullet took down a spike. Perfect shot placement behind the shoulder, deer went about 50 yards into some thick cover. No exit wound and no blood trail. Main part of the bullet was recovered in far side shoulder area. Bullet did about what I expected from a V-max. I'm hoping the 65 grain SGK will hit a little harder and provide more penetration for an exit wound.

How much would 40 or so 65sgk's cost to have someone make? I only load 12ga.

I am about to make a large run of 223 subs, and can make some 65 SGK, if needed.

I've been having success with the TSX on pigs and coyotes. Normal to get a pass through on pig and coyotes of course. Can't vouch for deer though.

The 64 grain Winchester power point is what I use and it has worked out well.

Just a PSP varmint bullet. Right you are. I use Remington Express 55gr PSP. Maybe it's a varmint round but it turns into a buzz saw inside a deer or pig. Never needed a second shot in 20+ years I've been shooting it. Longest shot was 120 yds.
