Hey gang - please help me get rid of fire ants under my feeder where the corn drops.
Obviously do not want to scare deer off.
Any thoughts?

Amdro if they're fire ants, Ortho Ant Killer if not. Turn off the feeder while treating and maybe hand feed over to one side.

Extinguish Plus. Hard to find but most feed stores carry it. Broadcast on the ground once/year. Preferrably when it's hot and dry. Won't affect your deer at all.

Harvester ants (the big red ones) won't spook deer much if any. I'd leave them alone, they're about done for the season anyway, aren't invasive or a problem to other animals like true fire ants, and they are the favorite food of horny toads.
I assure you, you're losing way more profit to birds and coons than ants.

Man I don't know, we have leaf cutter ants and they're pretty efficient at corn removal. Easy to find their holes though by following the moving trail of corn.

I used Amdro Ant Block a while back and haven't seen an ant since, and they were all over my yard. It killed at least 6 different types.

Get some Pyrethrin concentrate, or Permethrin 10% and pour a gallon of mix down the hole. then treat as necessary. I do this if the ants are directly under my feeder , it works and deer don't seem to even notice.

^^^ There you go, a better solution than mine. Organic and won't harm the deer. It works on worms, never tried ants, but if Western says so...

Diatomaceous earth will work also. It will be safer for the deer and not have any odor to spook the deer off.

I stir the mound with a stick and then apply some charcoal lighter fluid and light it. It generally takes 2 shots but, by then, the mound is too weak to sustain itself. It doesn't seem to bother the deer.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Diatomaceous earth will work also. It will be safer for the deer and not have any odor to spook the deer off. Takes a long time and goes to pooh when it gets wet. I have about a 100# for dusting the dogs and the stuff does work, just have to stay at it.

If they are the big red ants, which sounds like they are, I wouldn't even mess with them. They are harmless.
How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

I've used Amdro several times in my feeder pens. Works fine and no problem with deer.
