Well, the boss finally let me get a pup after several years of begging. We were having babies of our own, but we're done now and the youngest is almost 2. I ended up getting a male Chocolate Lab from a friend of mines dad. They had a litter, the mom and dad belong to them. They are both hunting dogs and the pups should make good duck dogs. I've already started doing some retrieving work. Just playing around mostly trying to gauge his interest in the retrieving. He will chase after the bumper and bring it back to you but he doesn't really like to hand it over. I'm trying to work that out. We got him at 7 weeks old and he's a little over 10 weeks old now. My girls and my wife love him. He tries our patience at times but I think I got me my duck retriever finally. It is very hard not to get hasty with things. As a hunter, I want him to do everything super quick. But I realize I need to slow it down and bring him along slow and steady. We ended up naming him Chase! It is a tribute to my brother and my original hunting buddy. His middle name is Chase. I also think it makes a good retriever name. Do y'all like it? On to the part you're all waiting for. Here is my little duck dog, Chase!

Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I know that look! It says, just wait till you're doing something and I'm going to chew something up. Also, keep him away from daughters, they will spoil him

There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

Great looking pup. Go ahead, you and the girls spoil him.

Good looking pup. Let him enjoy his puppy time. Around 4 months they start to figure things out and you can start pushing a little harder.

Great looking pup! Congrats. I agree with what Passthru said above...Let him be a puppy right now. No need to start "training" right away. He needs to learn to explore new areas and meet new people and see different situations. Socialization is much more important than retrieving right now. I know you want him to retrieve right now but keep it simple and don't do too much. You don't want him getting bored with it. If he's a well bred labrador all of that will come soon enough. Puppyhood is very short. Enjoy watching him grow. I highly recommend Bill Hillman's video "Training a Retriever Puppy" to help you learn how to get your pup started. Works wonders.

Thanks gents. The girls really love on him a lot. Especially the 18 month old. I do understand to take it slow at first. But it's so hard not to get in a rush. Lol. I figure maybe towards the end of the hunting season I can get him out in the field just to get a feel for it. I doubt I'll actually have him try to retrieve any birds at all this season. Really depends on his progression.
Thanks for the tip on the videos. I'll check them out...
