Loaded this in the deer hunting thread as "My first Deer", but thought I'd add the pic here too. If you want the story, its on that thread. Here is my first deer...exactly what I wanted.

My son and I did a little squirrel hunting at Nannie Stringfellow WMA this morning. Not the prettiest pic but it was pouring down rain and I didn't have anything to dry them with.

Decided to brave the weather yeaterday on a gulf coast public hunt... had a few flyovers but nothing was decoying to us (three much bigger spreads were to our left...) anyways. Got one spoonie at about 40 yards

Killed this buck on a FT Hood guided rifle hunt. I would consider Ft Hood public land bc its open to anyone as long as you go through the process of getting on post license, weapons registration, and area access permit. First pic looks like a bad shot but he was quartering away hard and I no other option except to hit far back and come out by opposite shoulder. Ended up with no gut shot and took out liver and both lungs.

Braved the waves of storms and 30 mph wind on the bay last weekend... saw a few good flocks of redheads but they often went to much bigger spreads to the left of us (four more groups were within a quarter mile to my left) only would up gettong one spoonie, but had lots of fun. Then made smoked gouda jalapeno poppers with the solo duck so everyone could get a bite!

I'm posting these for ScooterG. Looks like he had an awesome hunt! These are the last deer on Matador however. There are none left so there is no reason for anyone to apply in the future. Nothing left but hoot owls and polecats. No need to even put in for it.

Nice job and I bet your son had great fun too! I have a few questions regarding the special squirrel hunts on the WMA, so I am sending a PM.

Another great da . Wife and I headed for some diver ducks. Got up early and nothing would decoy on my modest two dozen spread. So the wife says lets run to town and get a mojo and a couple dozen more dekes and headed back. Within a few minutes had hundreds of ducks coming in! Even when we waded out they were still circling and one group came back three times with us standing in the spread. Crazy fun and a great day with my best friend. Heres her with a few...

I got lucky and was drawn for both Elephant Mountain and Chaparral. Here is my 7 1/2 old mule deer. The rifle is a Savage 10FCM Scout chambered in 308 Win. Back from the Chap yesterday afternoon. I killed this 7 1/2 8pt on Thursday at sunset with my Rem 600 chambered in 35 Rem.

A couple of nice deer Ranch Dog. Congrats! BTW, I love that Remington 600. My father had one in .243 and he loved it. Unfortunantly it got stolen many years ago.

Thanks guys! Yeap, very lucky!
The little 600 is a great rifle. My rifle has the Redfield Jr. open sight base on it. The rear ring unlocks and the scope swings off so that the blade rear sight on the scope base can be used. Scope returns to zero.

Sorry I have been busy. My son Jose shot it on the east lake tract of the Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR, they have both youth and adult hunts. I have never been picked but my boys have been picked several times Robert missed one but has shot a couple of young whitetails on this hunt, Jose has been picked twice and both times killed a bull.

Forgive my ignorance, but why is your scope mounted so far forward on your gun? Eye Relief? Never seen a scope mounted like that.

Forgive my ignorance, but why is your scope mounted so far forward on your gun? Eye Relief? Never seen a scope mounted like that. Based on Jeff Cooper's Scout Rifle concept. Though note the mounting of the scope or having a scope is not the only thing that makes a scout rifle. It is only one part of the concept. The use of the forward mounted low power long eye relief scope or other sight system such as a ghost ring is for fast target acquisition, ease of reloading, and handiness. http://www.scoutrifle.org/index.php?topic=1298.0
