Saw a used .280 remington model 742 at a pawn shop and am considering getting it. Clean, rust free, nice glossy wood stock. What would this rifle be worth?
I know the remington 742 has the nickname "jam-a-matic" but i've never seen a .280 in a semi automatic. Is this a rare rifle?

I know those 742's have a bad reputation for jamming, but I've got one in 30/06 that I shot for years before I finally bought something else and it never jammed. It was my Grandpa's before I got it and he never said anything about it jamming either. My brother has one just like it he has shot for over 20 years, still using it to this day, and it's never been a problem either. I can only speak for these two, but they have been problem free. I keep my guns really clean and I know he does too though.I think the main cause for any semi auto jamming is just because it's dirty. They usually aren't very expensive, $300-$400 for the used ones I see, maybe a little more if they are in really, really good condition. I've never seen one in .280, didn't even know they were ever made in that caliber.

I love 742's. 99 percent of what we see here with malfunctions, are maintenance issues (lack of). 280 is pretty rare in that gun too.
I have a couple of 308 Carbine length 742's that I love.

the .280rem was designed for the remington auto's and to compete with the 270win. one of the reasons you don't see the .280 is it was called 7mm express mag. for alot of it's life.I have a few 741 & 742 and have not had any jamming problem with them as long as you keep them clean. The .280 i have is a real sweet shooting rifle.I've not seen many for sale but know 2 or 3 others that have them in .280. Most of the 742 for sale you see are in 30-06 and the pawn shop are full of them for $250.00 to 375.00 on the '06s and other cals go for a little more $350.00 to 500.00

Thanks!
They are asking $400, I thought is was a little high. My fiancee just bought a Remington 742 .308 in excellent condition for $300. I would love to add this .280 to our gun collection, just wanted to get some opinions first.
