It is poisonous to eat without boiling and adding bacon fat. But why even go there?

thanks, I did some research and this is toxic to dogs so this plant has already been chopped down. I have some in the hunting area I will use for scent cover around a ground blind. People do eat the leaves...ok

From my understanding they only eat the leaves of the early growth, after much boiling to get out the toxins.
Chopping it down is a good thing in my book. Don't know about using it for scent cover though, not if I had to touch it with my hands and not being able to wash them.

It might be toxic but animals generally don't eat it and birds are immune. Regarding pet, livestock, an other animal poisoning, Owen notes that "birds are apparently immune to this poison" and that animals usually do not eat the plant because of its bitter taste." The OARDC scientists echo the lack of animal palatability, and note that "most animals avoid eating it unless little else is available, or if it is in contaminated hay. Horses, sheep and cattle have been poisoned by eating fresh leaves or green fodder, and pigs have been poisoned by eating the roots." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytolacca_americana
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Blanchard, LA has a Poke Salad festival every year. Good eating if cooked right. Will make you very sick if not cooked right.

Pick the young leaves and par boil at least twice adding bacon the second time. Any time we cleared a new fence row or pushed brush in a pasture and had rain we had a lot of it, spread by bird doo doo. Close to turnip or mustard greens and make you go like a tied goose if not par boiled.

The leaves make good tea... I wouldn't drink it though.
