Anyone have any tips for a rookie? This will be my first season. Not sure what to do, how, when, etc. Any help would be good! Also, if you know of anyone around the Lubbock area that would let me tag along, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am going to throw this out here for you, others mileage will vary.

If you have a place to go, that has turkeys, shoot the first Gobbler that responds to your call.

It will probably be a jake (young bird), but it will come boiling in like Big Daddy.

Shoot him and get the kill fever out of your blood.

Depending on where you are hunting, you will have 3 more tags you can fill.

After that first bird, you can start the learning process and figure out how to get those bigger/older toms with in range.

If your lucky and a big bird comes in first, kill him, but don't get arrogant with it, his mind was on a hot hen and not a hot load of bird shot or an arrow or a bullet.

Absorb the entire experience, because to me Spring Turkey hunting is one of the ultimate forms of hunting. JMO.

Best of Luck on your hunts.

Like Crazyhorse said, Id shoot the first bird that you get the shot at. They are very smart and get verrry educated if you let one leave. However, like last year all of parker county was under some kind of jake spell and that all that we saw all season. So my uncle and I bagged our one jake a piece and then didnt shoot another bird...it was sad but we want to save the birds for next year. Turkeys are very smart and if you spook them they might not ever come back...

Keep your calling simple and to a minimum.

Your words and how you use them will expose your character

A must have is a good turkey seat. If your sitting on the ground it doesn't take long for your legs to go numb and your butt to start hurting.

I'm telling every turkey hunter that I can about the new turkey seat that I found. It's called The Air Saddle and this is the best, most comfortable seat I have ever found.

Check it out at www.racknfeathers.com or www.myairsaddle.com

Trust me, this will be the best $20 you ever spend on turkey hunting.

The best advice is BE still I mean dont blink. If you can see him he has already seen you.Only move when the line of sight is blocked.I would get cd and listen to it every chance you get to learn some calling. I started out on my own too with some success. I finally hooked up with someone who let me tag along and now I am eating up with spring turkey fever.
